The transient products have been characterized of alpha-methylstyrene (AMS) degradation by P. aeruginosa st. 8 which utilizes AMS in high concentrations (2-10 g/l) as the only source of carbon and energy. The existence of two pathway of AMS catabolism has been demonstrated. The minor pathway is connected with accumulation of nonmetabolized products of an isopropenyl fragment. The main pathway leads through formation of hydroxylation products with subsequent meta-cleavage of aromatic ring. A possible participation of wide-specific meta-pyrocatechase in AMS catabolism has been discussed.
The behaviour of a plasmid-carrying Pseudomonas aeruginosa DC13 strain was studied under the conditions of industrial sewage biological purification from alpha-methyl styrene. The expression of the phenotype encoded by plasmid DNA was found to be stable, and the degradation of alpha-methyl styrene was shown to be effective.

Microorganisms belonging to the genera Pseudomonas, Micrococcus, Bacillus and Rhodotorula are flocculated with divinyl styrene latex. The process of flocculation depends on a number of physico-chemical factors but, all in all, is universal for microorganisms with different taxonomy, morphology and physiology. The structure of artificial bioflocs has been studied using optical and scanning electron microscopy.
The effect of highly toxic compounds such as alpha-methyl styrene, crotonaldehyde and mercuric ions on the respiratory and dehydrogenase activity of sludge microflora was studied in refineries of acetaldehyde processes. The microflora was shown to be capable of adapting to these compounds. However, their high concentrations are toxic and inhibit the respiratory and dehydrogenase activity by 100%.

The work was aimed at studying alpha-methylstyrene oxidation by three active Pseudomonas cultures. P. acidovorans 9 oxidized alpha-methylstyrene only to acetophenone whereas two P. aeruginosa cultures assimilated the compound entirely. Analysis of the intermediate products and enzymes catalyzing the aromatic ring cleavage suggests that these strains oxidize alpha-methylstyrene via a new unknown pathway.
Two bacterial strains assimilating alpha-methylsterene as a sole carbon and energy source were isolated from the sewage of an industrial plant producing synthetic rubber. The morphological, cultural and physiologo-biochemical properties of the strains were studied and their taxonomic position was determined. One of the cultures was classified as Bacillus cereus and the other as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The rate of alpha-methylsterene destruction in the chemically defined medium was shown to depend on the conditions of cultivation.
