Twenty-four insulin-dependent diabetic children and 114 normal control children, all between the ages of 6 to 16 years, were investigated for riboflavin deficiency. The method used was a measurement of erythrocyte glutathione reductase activity and the results were expressed as the activity coefficient (AC). None of the children had received vitamin supplementation. The percentage of diabetic children with riboflavin deficiency was 4 fold greater than in non diabetics. Supplementation with daily oral riboflavin quickly returned all AC values to normal.
Epidermal growth factor (EGF) or saline was administered intraperitoneally to hypophysectomized adult male CD2F1 mice or intact controls at 0700 hr. Subgroups of mice were killed at 4, 8, or 12 hr after injection. EGF was shown to stimulate [3H]TdR incorporation into DNA into several organs as previously reported. The response to EGF was found to be enhanced in both hypophysectomized and fasted mice. Differences in [3H]TdR incorporation into DNA, corneal epithelium mitotic index, RNA in pancreas and kidney of hypophysectomized and intact mice are reported. EGF was shown to result in stomach enlargement due to increased luminal contents in both hypophysectomized and intact mice.

Properties of some of the bacteriophages of Streptococcus pneumoniae are reviewed. Studies with these phages have yielded several interesting observations and results. (1) A simple transfection system that uses DNA of mature pneumococcal phages was developed; results of studies utilizing this system have determined the intracellular events that followed infection with these bacteriophages. (2) Some pneumococcal phages have shown dependence on the bacterial (host) murein hydrolase for the liberation of phage progeny. (3) Phage Dp-1 has been described as the first lipid-containing phage with a gram-positive bacterial host. (4) Phage Cp-1, a recently isolated phage of unique morphology, promises to become a useful phage for studies of the genetic of the pneumococcus.
