A case of giant vesical calculosis is presented on account of its statistical and radiographical unusualness. Its aetiopathogenesis is briefly discussed.
Preliminary results are reported on the endo-vesical use of a complex of synthetic peptides ('Peptichemio') in 15 patients suffering from bladder neoplasia who were judged to be beyond surgery or radiotherapy. The agent was introduced into bladder in 20 mg doses diluted in 50 ml of 5% glucose and retained for approximately 30 minutes. Treatment was repeated every 5 to 7 days. The disappearance of the neoplastic mass in 13% of the cases and its reduction in a further 53% encourage the continued use of the preparation in local regional therapy of bladder neoplasia, and the findings help to establish treatment times and doses. For the moment, the authors recommend increasing the interval between treatments to 10 days or more once the neoplastic mass has been reduced or disappeared.

PURPOSE: Because sonography identifies abnormalities of the gastroesophageal junction, it is essential to understand the normal sonographic anatomy. The aim of this study was to determine the normal sonographic appearance of the gastroesophageal junction and its variations and to provide measurements of the abdominal esophagus in asymptomatic, healthy children. METHODS: In this prospective study, 124 healthy children (75 boys and 49 girls), aged 2 days-12 years, underwent abdominal sonography. With the patient in a supine position, the transducer was placed under the xiphoid and the ultrasound beam was directed cephalad through the window of the left lobe of the liver. The length of the abdominal esophagus was measured from the point at which it penetrated the diaphragm to the gastroesophageal junction. The thickness was measured on the anterior wall at the midpoint of the abdominal esophagus. RESULTS: The gastroesophageal junction was identified by sonography in all of the children. The mean length of the abdominal portion of the esophagus ranged from 18 mm in the newborns to 34 mm in children older than 6 years. The wall thickness ranged from 2.4 mm to 5.7 mm. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that visualization of the gastroesophageal junction and measurement of the abdominal esophagus are readily achievable with real-time sonography in healthy children.

This study evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of idebenone, a new neuroactive drug, in 33 patients aged from 50 to 80 years. They were affected by chronic cerebrovascular disease (CCVD) and their last cerebrovascular accident had taken place at least 3 months prior to enrollment. All these subjects presented a score within the range of the following psychometric scales: Hamilton Scale for Depression <24; Hachinski Dementia Score >/=18 and < 25; Mini Mental State >/=16 and </=22; Hachinski Ischemic Score </=7. Even without a cortical degenerative disease, their cerebral computerized tomography (CT) scan had to be positive for CCVD. The study was divided into three different periods: (1) 7 days from the enrollment and wash-out; (2) 3 months of treatment (idebenone 45 mg b.i.d. per os); (3) 1 week for the follow up. During the study, the following evaluation scales were administered: Sandoz Clinical Assessment of Geriatrics (SCAG), Gottfries-Brane-Steen (GBS), Instrumental Activity of Daily Living (IADL), Greene Relatives' Stress Scale (GRSS), Toulouse Piéron, Randt Memory Test. The results show that idebenone is effective both in improving the sense of psycho-physical wellbeing and in improving cognitive, attentive and behavioural efficiency. The tolerability of the treatment was very good.
The main parameters of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (i.e. the gain or reflectivity, the long-time constant of the semicircular canals, the time constant of the mechano-neural transduction, and that of the central leaky integrator) were computed from the post-rotational nystagmic responses of unilateral Meniere's patients. Comparison with normal subjects showed a decrease of the first two parameters both in CW and CCW responses. No significant changes were observed in the remaining parameters. Probably due to a process of central compensation, a high level of symmetry was observed mainly in longstanding patients.
