[Virus-like particles in yeast protoplasts. I. Electron microscopic demonstration].

In ultrathin sections and negatively stained isolates from protoplasts of a strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae showing abnormal morphology and degeneration phenomena the presence of virus-like particles within the cells could be demonstrated. The isometric particles have diameters of about 50 nm, the electron dense centre is surrounded by distinct envelope. Protoplastic containing up to 30,000 particles could be found. It could be demonstrated that there exists a correlation between the amount of particles and the degree of degeneration of the cellular substructure. Protoplasts with high titres of virus-like particles obviously undergo lysis. Plaque formation on agar plates could not be seen. It is concluded that the phenomena observed can be compared with cytopathological effects caused by viruses in other cell systems.

[Indications for proton spin tomography in central nervous system diseases in childhood. A 4-year experience report on 164 cases].

1. Magnetic Resonance Tomography (MRT) is the method of choice for precise, comprehensive and reproducible imaging of congenital malformations and space occupying lesions. 2. MRT indicates inflammatory processes of the CNS earlier than CT by which extension and localization are visualized more precisely. MRT gains particular importance for follow-up studies because there is no radiation burden. In cases of disseminated inflammatory lesions or concerning early diagnosis of Herpes-encephalitis an exact and rapid diagnosis is possible. 3. In patients suffering from convulsions with or without focal lesions in EEG MRT instead of CT should be applied as MRT allows three-dimensional imaging not influenced by bone artifacts. 4. CT is superior to MRT if small calcifications or acute hemorrhage are looked for. MRT enables us to differentiate several stages of bleeding. 5. In patients with cerebral AV-malformations angiography can be replaced by MRT. However, angiography is indispensable for small aneurysms and AV-malformations in the spinal canal. 6. Due to high soft tissue contrast MRT is the imaging modality of choice in patients with metabolic and degenerative diseases and disturbances of brain maturation. 7. In infants sonography should be done first and supplemented by MRT and/or CT.

[New aspects in the diagnosis of intervertebral disk displacement of the upper lumbar spine with special reference to magnetic resonance tomography].

A report is presented on two patients who received surgery on a disc prolapse between the lumbar vertebrae 4 and 5 as treatment for compression of the fifth lumbar root, but in whom the clinically relevant disc prolapse was located higher (lumbar vertebrae 1/2 or thoracic vertebra 12/lumbar vertebra 1). Magnetic resonance tomography made a major contribution to the later diagnosis of the high disc prolapses. Besides precise localization of the lesion, MRT made it easier to understand why such a high disc prolapse can cause a compression syndrome of the fifth lumbar root.
