Small charcoal particles adsorbing Mitomycin C (MMC-CH) were used in the treatment of lymphnode metastasis of gastric cancer. Immediately after injection of MMC-CH into the gastric wall, lymph capillaries and regional lymphnodes were stained in black and the high concentration of MMC was delivered with charcoal particles. MMC-CH was injected preoperatively using endoscope into the gastric wall of 20 patients with gastric cancer. MMC-CH was observed in 70% of metastatic regional lymphnodes. Systemic side effect was not noted at all. Erosion and shallow ulcers were observed at the site of injection but no perforation occurred.

E. Hecke initiated the application of representation theory to the study of cusp forms. He showed that, for p a prime congruent to 3 mod 4, the difference of multiplicities of certain conjugate representations of SL(F(p)) on cusp forms of degree 1, level p, and weight >/=2 is given by the class number h(-p) of the field Q( radical-p). We apply the holomorphic Lefschetz theorem to actions on the Igusa compactification of the Siegel moduli space of degree 2 to compute the values of characters of the representations of Sp(4)(F(p)) on certain spaces of cusp forms of degree 2 and level p at parabolic elements of this group. Our results imply that here too, the difference in multiplicities of conjugate representations of Sp(4)(F(p)) is a multiple of h(-p).

Of 26 dogs with elbow osteochondrosis, 11 had osteochondritis dissecans of the medial humeral condyle, seven had fragmentation of the coronoid process of the ulna and eight had both these lesions. Sixteen cases had bilateral involvement. The labrador and retriever breeds were most often affected and the male sex predominated. The clinical features included a foreleg lameness in a young immature dog with pain localised to the elbow joint. The most consistent radiological feature was the presence of osteophyte development especially on the dorsal aspect of the anconeal process, caused by secondary osteoarthritis. The authors are not certain that surgical treatment of elbow osteochondrosis is justified; more extended long-term studies are necessary before surgical and conservative therapeutic regimens can be fully evaluated.
Polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis was performed on unconcentrated cerebrospinal fluid and serum from 132 neurological patients and from 33 patients without neurological disease. The presence of unique, discrete immunoglobulin bands in the gamma-globulin (cathodal) region of the cerebrospinal fluid gel was assessed as a diagnostic test for multiple sclerosis. The procedure exhibited a specificity for multiple sclerosis of 94% and a sensitivity of 72%, and is easier to perform than most of the other published procedures used to demonstrate oligoclonal immunoglobulins in cerebrospinal fluid. It is recommended for use in the clinical chemistry laboratory as a valuable adjunct to the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

With both Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, the results documented compared well with reference series. Hence the advantages of a modest clinic need not be at the cost of recovery or of survival. A major factor attenuating the scale of therapy in Hodgkin's disease is the risk of inducing second malignancies. Four such complications have been observed amongst 27 patients with Hodgkin's disease. Amongst the patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma better results were noted than the designation 'poor prognosis histology' had led the authors to expect. These findings suggest that the concept of histologically based prognosis may be over-subscribed and that contemporary therapeutic strategies can be extremely effective in this group.

Secretions of larvae of the blowfly Calliphora erythrocephala digested experimental rat skin burn eschar in vivo and in vitro when applied topically in a vanishing cream base. Debridement was characterized by de-epithelialization and digestion of dermal collagen to a subfollicular level over a 3-day period. Analytic investigation of the secretions demonstrated the presence of enzymes with activities characteristic of trypsin, leucine aminopeptidase, and carboxypeptidases A and B. These were partially characterized. There was no evidence of chymotrypsin, elastase, or collagenase. Preparation of a suitable therapeutic form could result in a preparation useful for enzymatic debridement.
The ability to dispose of an acute intravenous potassium load was examined in glucocorticoid-replaced adrenalectomized rats and in rats made insulinopenic with somatostatin. Adrenalectomy resulted in a significantly greater rise in plasma potassium concentration compared with controls (1.46 +/- 0.11 vs. 0.92 +/- 0.05 mEq/liter, P less than 0.001) despite the excretion of an identical percentage (47%) of the administered potassium load in 2 hours. Somatostatin-induced insulinopenia (insulin levels decreased from 37 +/- 5 to 20 +/- 3 microU/ml) was also associated with a significantly greater increment in plasma potassium controls, despite the excretion of a similar amount (39%) of the administered potassium load. In animals with combined adrenal and insulin deficiency, the rise in plasma potassium concentration occurred earlier and remained elevated for a more prolonged period of time compared with animals with either adrenalectomy or insulinopenia alone. Conclusion. During acute potassium loading in the rat, insulin and adrenal hormones play an important role in maintaining normal potassium homeostasis, primarily by enhancing potassium uptake by external tissues.

The response of lymphocytes from 17 patients with primary, secondary, and tertiary syphilis to phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) and to allogeneic lymphocytes was normal in heterologous serum; however, the responsiveness of cells from some patients with primary and secondary disease was significantly reduced in the presence of autologous serum. As cells from healthy controls invariably responded better to these stimuli in autologous serum, the sera from 81 patients with syphilis were screened for immunosuppressive properties. Sera from 25 primary, 32 secondary, two tertiary, six congenital, and 16 latent cases of syphilis were examined for their ability to reduce the responsiveness of normal cells to PHA. These experiments were performed with test sera as the sole source of serum for the cultures or with test sera added to cultures containing optimally supportive amounts of pooled human plasma.Stimulation of normal cells from one control in human plasma and 20% test serum showed that only in sera from congenital cases of syphilis was the mean response significantly different from the response seen in control sera; a significant increase in the response to stimulation occurred. The range of response to PHA with sera from cases of primary and secondary syphilis was wider than with normal sera. Sera from five (20%) cases of primary and 14 (44%) cases of secondary syphilis appeared to be immunosuppressive. When retested on another sample of normal cells, these sera were consistently immunosuppressive even in the presence of 15% pooled human plasma. Thus, in early syphilis antigenic stimulation may result in the release from suppressor cells of non-specific immunoregulators of cell-mediated immunity. Such phenomena may be a prelude to the development of tolerance to treponemal antigens. In congenital syphilis the development of suppressor cells may be impaired, resulting in the apparent immunostimulatory properties of serum from such cases.
