Callosal projections of the striate cortex in the neonatal rabbit.

Callosal fiber projections of the striate cortex were studied in newborn rabbits using the methods of 1) retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and 2) orthograde transport of tritiated leucine. Data collected from 6-8 day old animals revealed not only the existence of adult-like commissural fibers in the lateral striate cortex bordering the occipital area, but also an aberrant callosal projection from the medial striate cortex, an area not known to have any commissural fibers in the adult brain of those mammalian species studied.

Afferent Pathways↗

Combination therapy with ticarcillin and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim for infections in patients with cancer.

Intravenous (IV) antibiotic therapy with a combination of ticarcillin disodium and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim was administered as initial empiric treatment of 218 febrile episodes in patients with cancer. Seventy-nine (77%) of 102 episodes of infection were cured, and the temperature returned to normal in 88 (74%) of 199 febrile episodes without proved infection. The response rates for the major sites of infection were as follows: septicemia, 89%; pneumonia, 52%, soft-tissue infections, 85%; and urinary tract infections, 100%. The cure rate of Gram-negative aerobic bacillary infections was 87%. No significant influence of initial neutrophil count on response rate was noted, although patients in whom the neutrophil count increased during therapy had a higher response rate (84%) than patients in whom the neutrophil count decreased or remained stable (72%). The combination of ticarcillin and IV sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim is satisfactory initial empiric antibiotic therapy for febrile episodes in neutropenic patients with cancer.

The effect of human serum on 3H-thymidine incorporation in human prostate tumors in tissue culture.

Human prostatic tumors, 4 adenomas and 4 adenocarcinomas, were established in tissue culture. We used the incorporation of 3H-thymidine into deoxyribonucleic acid as a measure of cell activity to compare the effects of supplementing the culture media with human or fetal calf serum. 3H-thymidine incorporation was greater with human serum, with up to 120 per cent increase observed. The addition of dihydrotestosterone (10(-8)M.) did not enhance or inhibit 3H-thymidine incorporation.

Tricuspid atresia with christmas disease (hemophilia B). Report of a case.

A case combining Christmas disease and tricuspid atresia is presented. A severe coagulation defect in a hypoxic, polycythemic patient poses an added grave risk to major surgery. In the presence of marked and worsening symptoms, however, major surgery can be performed in these difficult cases. Close liason with a skilled hematology department is essential. Minimal tissue dissection is advised, and the usefulness of a reversed saphenous vein conduit is described.

Summation of response rates to discriminative stimuli associated with qualitatively different reinforcers.

In Experiment I, a four-ply multiple schedule was used to study the effects on rate of responding in rats of food, water, and food and/or water reinforcement under different deprivation conditions. Food and water were associated separately with different stimuli, the combination of which was associated with food and water together, or with food or water randomly. Rates in the presence of the combined stimuli were consistently intermediate to the rates generated by the separate stimuli, a result seemingly incompatible with a "summation" hypothesis. Experiment II was a simplified systematic replication of Experiment I, verifying the major findings.

Case report: candida infection presenting as laryngitis.

Three patients with acute leukemia are described who developed hoarseness as an initial presentation of candida infection. Two of these patients subsequently developed systemic candidiasis. Patients with acute leukemia who develop hoarseness should be investigated for laryngeal candidiasis and considered for systemic antifungal therapy.
