A comparison of ibuprofen and dihydrocodeine in relieving pain following wisdom teeth removal.

Although dihydrocodeine (DF118) is widely prescribed by general dental practitioners, there is little evidence that it is successful in controlling post-operative dental pain. Ibuprofen is known to be effective in this situation. A single dose, double-blind study was carried out in 148 patients to compare 400 mg ibuprofen with 30 mg dihydrocodeine and placebo for treating moderate to severe pain following the removal of unilateral, impacted mandibular third molar teeth under local anaesthesia. An additional dose of either ibuprofen or dihydrocodeine was available after 2 hours. The post-operative ibuprofen reduced pain and produced more pain relief than dihydrocodeine or placebo. Furthermore, fewer patients receiving ibuprofen took additional analgesic at 2 hours. Patients who received ibuprofen as supplementary medication also experienced less pain and had greater pain relief than those receiving dihydrocodeine as supplementary medication, even when their post-operative treatment had been placebo. More patients reported the medication as having been effective if they took ibuprofen either post-operatively or as supplementary analgesia. Ibuprofen is an appropriate analgesic for treating post-operative dental pain.

Effect of practice on visual backward masking.

Five experiments studied practice effects for 4, 7, 11 subjects on visual backward masking using a signal-detection procedure under various conditions. Exp. I determined the minimum perceptible critical stimulus duration (CSD) for criterion identification of a target stimulus, the letter T or A. In Exp. II, the stimulus was presented at the critical stimulus duration (CSD) followed by a pattern mask at intervals of 20 to 120 msec. for 15 separate sessions. In Exp. III (N = 4) the mask followed the CSD in intervals of 2-msec. increments until subjects reached criterion accuracy. Exps. IV and V (Ns = 4, 7) provided partial replications of Exps. II and III. Naive subjects were used, and the stimulus duration was constant for all subjects. When masking functions were obtained at a threshold, considerable variability was found and subjects improve slowly or not at all over sessions. With a fixed supra-threshold stimulus, all subjects improve with practice. The inportance of these findings is discussed as they relate to common (and largely untested) assumptions made in the backward masking and perception literature.

Is there a future for single photon emission tomography?

Emission tomography has the potential to be developed into a clinically useful technique. Its clinical applications, however, will be limited and not in the main stream of space occupying disease detection but in the definition of quantitative information particularly relevant in those disease processes where the metabolic component is the most important one. Special purpose designed instrumentation may prove to be the best of several possible compromises.

99mTc-imidodiphosphonate: a superior radio-pharmaceutical for in vivo positive myocardial infarct imaging. I: Experimental data.

99mTc-Imidodiphosphonate (99mTc-IDP) was investigated as an agent for nuclear medicine imaging of acute myocardial infarctions. For this purpose a suitable animal model was found. After coronary artery ligation reproducible myocardial infarcts were obtained with 80% of surviving animals. Scans of the myocardial infarcts were recorded with a high resolution gamma camera and good quality images were obtained. 99mTc-IDP ratios for normal and infarcted tissue were calculated and compared with similar data available from other 99mTc-labelled phosphates. With an infarct/normal ratio of 21:1, 99mTc-IDP is so far the best radiopharmaceutical for nuclear medicine imaging of necrosed heart muscle. Images of the myocardial infarcts have been recorded as early as 6 hours after infarction.
