Sex and sociocultural correlates of urinary incontinence in Israeli preschool children.

Urinary incontinence in children aged 2 to 6 years whose mothers varied in ethnic descent, in level of education, and in immigration status was studied in Israel. Mothers of 302 children were interviewed in well-baby clinics regarding primary and secondary urinary incontinence of their children. A significant age trend was found for attaining primary urinary continence. However, various interactions between mothers' ethnic descent, mothers' level of education, and mothers' immigration status were associated with different rates of primary and secondary urinary incontinence in their children. Moreover, sex differences in rates of primary and secondary urinary incontinence were also associated with mothers' ethnic descent and level of education. It is suggested that different levels of maternal emotional availability to the child in the various subgroups can account for most of the findings.

Locus of control and socioeconomic status: does internal locus of control reflect real resources and opportunities or personal coping abilities?

The present study attempts to provide answers to the following questions: Does locus of control reflect real opportunities and resources such as higher income and education, or internal strengths and coping abilities? Is it locus of control, socioeconomic status or the interaction between these two variables that affects depression level and life satisfaction? Data was obtained from a stratified random sample of 150 Israeli widows, under the age of 54. Multiple regressional analysis was followed by analysis of variance in order to examine the interaction hypothesis. The results, providing no support for the interaction hypothesis, indicate that both locus of control and socioeconomic status are related to depression and life satisfaction independently, and that locus of control reflects more than socioeconomic resources.

Pyeloureterostomy or ureteroneocystostomy in renal transplantation?

A retrospective comparison of pyeloureterostomy and external ureteroneocystostomy as methods of reconstructing the urinary tract in 128 renal transplants is presented. There was one urological complication in 52 pyeloureterostomies (1.9%) compared with 4 in the 76 ureteroneocystostomies (5.3%). 6/0 Polydioxanone (PDS) is preferred to Prolene for the anastomosis because of possible calculus formation on the latter. Wound sepsis is commoner in pyeloureterostomies undergoing concomitant nephrectomy, despite prophylactic antibiotics, though this is not statistically significant and the overall sepsis rate is higher for ureteroneocystostomy. Nephrectomy was avoided in 17 selected cases by simply ligating the recipient ureter where the pre-transplant urine output was low. Two of these patients developed hydronephrosis in the isolated kidney and required later nephrectomy.

Conservative management of post-traumatic parotid fistulae and sialoceles: a prospective study.

A prospective study of 14 consecutive patients with parotid injuries treated over a 4-month period, is presented. Three patients underwent emergency duct repair and 11 patients, presenting with delayed fistulae or subcutaneous collections of saliva (sialoceles), were treated conservatively with uniform success. Glandular injury closed within an average of 5 days of treatment and ductal leaks within approximately 14 days.

The Stroop phenomenon: perceptual conflict or response competition?

The Stroop phenomenon has recently been explained by two contrasting approaches, the perceptual conflict and the response competition. This experiment was designed to evaluate the two different explanations. 24 undergraduates were tested on the three sets of Stroop stimuli while hearing their verbal responses under delayed auditory feedback and under normal feedback. Delayed feedback produced differential response decrements across Stroop conditions. The findings supported predictions of the response-competition hypothesis and disconfirmed those of the perceptual-conflict hypothesis.
