Gastric albumin clearance studies were carried out in 26 patients with alcoholic cirrhosis and in 10 control subjects. The mean clearance was significantly higher in patients than in control subjects. An increased protein gastric loss in cirrhotic patients was observed only in presence of gastritis. The presence or absence of distended esophageal varices did not influence the protein loss.

A mathematical model which describes the effect of pH and dissolved oxygen on growth and activity of Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter in mixed culture is presented. A good fit is obtained between experimental data and theoretical curves computed with parameters estimated by independent methods. Experimental data together with simulation studies show that inadequate aeration induces a temporal shift of ammonium and nitrite oxidations resulting in a transient nitrite accumulation similar to that caused by an increase of temperature.

Serum gastrin concentration was measured in newborns and infants with no gastrointestinal disorders, in the fasting state and after food stimulation. Mean fasting concentration in 14 newborns aged 1 to 12 days (130 . 4 pg/ml +/- 11 . 4 SE) was significantly higher than the mean value in 23 infants aged 1.5 to 22 months (101.4 +/- 6.6 pg/ml). Ingestion of the usual milk meal resulted in a definite rise of the serum gastrin level in the 5 subjects tested (3 newborns and 2 infants). The mean fasting serum gastrin level in 6 babies with hiatus hernia and gastro-oesophageal reflux was found to be no different from the corresponding value in 8 age-matched controls. However, a conspicuously raised fasting gastrin concentration was observed in one infant with lower oesophageal dyskinesia. The results indicate that the release of gastrin and the reactivity of the hormone-producing sites to food stimulation in early life are similar to those in adult humans. No defect of gastrin release was shown in patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux.
By comparison with control subjects, patients with chronic pancreatitis and alcoholic liver cirrhosis displayed in basal condition a reduction in salivary volume, bicarbonate and an amylase concentration and outputs. These reductions disappeared during stimulating by chewing parafilm. It is concluded that these reductions are not the consequence of a specific process affecting both the salivary glands and the pancreas. It is suggested that they are more likely due to a decreased sensitivity of the salivary nervous control than to an actual alteration in the secretory capacities.
Recent data concerning the mortality from oesophageal cancer by régions and départements in France are reported (around 5,000 deaths yearly). It was decided to investigate whether any time trend had become apparent and whether the correlation with alcoholism could still be observed. Numbers of deaths from oesophageal cancer for the years 1961-1963 and 1967-1968, and from cirrhosis and alcoholism for 1967 and 1968 were collected as well as the corresponding population from the census figures of 1962 and 1968. A cohort analysis using the data for 5 reference years from (1951 to 1971) is presented. Among European countries, France has the highest mortality rate from oesophageal cancer in males (13.65/100,000) and very high sex ratio (12.88). The rates are particularly high in western areas, especially Basse-Normandie. Over the 20-year period from 1951 to 1971, a progress of 32.7% was observed in males. The increase in mortality in males is greatest in the youngest age groups. In 1967-1968, there is a strong correlation between oesophageal cancer mortality and mortality from cirrhosis and alcoholism, the latter being more significant.
