Enteritis necroticans in Port Moresby--report of three cases.

Three cases of enteritis necroticans seen at Port Moresby General Hospital are described. All three cases proved diagnostic problems and in all three the diagnosis was made only at laparotomy. While the condition is uncommon in Port Moresby, these cases indicate that it must now be considered earlier rather than later.

The effects of an antipsychotic medication on the classroom behavior of four schizophrenic male children.

An analysis of attention to task, deviant classroom behavior, and academic productivity data was conducted on four schizophrenic male children to whom an antipsychotic medication was administered. Although the results indicated varying degrees of success as a function of this psychotropic treatment, the medication appeared to have little influence on classroom behavior for three of the children. It was concluded that empirical strategies must be developed for objectively assessing the influence of medications administered for the purpose of controlling the classroom behavior of disturbed children.

Nursing's role in Y2K planning.

Why have more nurses not fulfilled their role in planning for the year 2000? Nurses need to apply their skills and expertise to solving often overlooked problems such as point-of-service applications, transactions with business partners, and contingency planning.

Formic acid inhalation injury: a case report.

We report a case in which a patient sustained an inhalation injury as a result of aerosolized formic acid. The patient sustained a partial-thickness burn to the face from a chemical spray; however, as a result of aerosolization, he also inhaled formic acid. This resulted in a reversible pulmonary chemical injury. Inhalation of formic acid results in a reactive airway dysfunction syndrome--a common response to inhalation of an occupational irritant.

Burn injury in kitchen workers: a cause for prevention.

Preventable thermal injuries in professional kitchen workers have been identified, and we have introduced a protective garment. Because of the nature of their occupation, kitchen workers are prone to thermal injuries. It has been our experience that the majority of these injuries are scald injuries on the ankles and dorsum of the feet. We propose that a protective garment, such as a waterproof shoe and garter, could reduce the incidence of these injuries.

Nursing and business: the new frontier.

Understanding free market principles is important for fulfilling nursing's obligation to professional stewardship. Stewardship is the act of conserving and enhancing what we have received from those before us, then disseminating it to new generations in the hopes of creating a stronger, more vital profession. In order to do that, nursing needs an improved understanding of the marketplace. This will help nursing grow as a profession, particularly through entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial efforts.
