Mucinous transformation of synovium.

A unique case of mucinous transformation of knee joint synovium associated with recurrent mucinous joint effusions and severe osteoarthritis is presented. The lesion probably represented an extreme pathologic expression of physiologic synoviocytic synthesis of hyaluronic acid. It did not appear to be related to other myxoid lesions that may occur in this area.

Benign neural invasion in vasitis nodosa.

Three instances of invasion of nerves of the spermatic cord by benign proliferative ductules of the vas deferens following vasectomy are reported. This phenomenon occurred in association with the histopathological features of vasitis nodosa and was noted in tissue removed during vasovasostomy in two cases and from a painful lower inguinal nodule at the site of vasectomy in a third example. Such neural invasion deserves attention because, especially in association with a proliferative ductular pattern, it may be mistaken for adenocarcinoma. The lesion is also of intrinsic interest in the light of benign neural invasion at other sites.

Meningovascular syphilis after 'appropriate' treatment of primary syphilis.

Meningovascular syphilis developed in a patient two years after the treatment of primary syphilis with a single intramuscular injection of 2.4 million units of penicillin G benzathine as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. Although it could not be established with certainty whether this infection represented a reinfection or a treatment failure, the case emphasizes the necessity for serologic follow-up examination in all patients treated for primary syphilis.

Blue naevus of lymph node capsule: report of a unique case.

This paper is the second report dealing with blue naevus of a lymph node, and represents only the third case of this entity. It is unique in that it is the first example in which more than one node was involved. The lesion is discussed in relation to the apparently somewhat more common presence of naevus-cell aggregates of lymph nodes, and in relation to blue naevi located in other unusual locations. The occurrence of these various naevoid lesions favours the concept that blue naevi of lymph nodes represent an arrest of migration of melanocytes from the neural crest, rather than a form of "benign metastasis" from a cutaneous site.

Focal arteries of the breast.

The fourth case of focal (isolated) arteritis of the breast is reported. The lesions, which may be unilateral or bilateral, presents as a painful or tender mass and has been confused clinically with carcinoma. Arteritis, either necrotizing or granulomatous, may occur as an isolated phenomenon restricted to a solitary organ; it does not necessarily imply concurrent or subsequent systemic vasculitis.

Primary carcinoid of prostate.

The first case of pure primary prostatic carcinoid is presented. Previous demonstration of the presence of enterochromaffin cells in the non-neoplastic prostate and in otherwise ordinary adenocarcinomas of the prostate furnishes a basis for the origin of this unique neoplasm.

The effectiveness of planning for community mental health center inpatient units.

The number of beds identified among 308 community mental health centers in operation in 1972 bore little relation to inpatient case load or to the proportion of center patients likely to require hospitalization. Analysis of occupancy data indicated that there was a surplus of beds in many centers. These findings suggest a lack of effective planning for community mental health center impact on the nature of psychiatric treatment provided. This is suggested by the close relationship between inpatient capacity and average duration of stay.

Mucocele-like changes in Bartholin's glands.

Two cases are described in which changes identical to those of oral mucocele occurred in Bartholin's glands. The histopathology, histochemistry, and pathogenesis are discussed.
