Pregnancy during the hysterogram cycle.

Because of potential mutagenic effects of radiation on the soon-to-be fertilized ovum, we questioned whether we should advise against conception during the cycle in which a hysterosalpingogram is performed. Our results do not suggest any increase in the incidence of spontaneous abortion or congenital anomalies in these patients. Therefore, we see no need to advise against conception during the cycle in which a hysterosalpingogram is performed.

Laparoscopy and the infertility evaluation.

Results of laparoscopic evaluation of 112 infertile women are presented. Laparoscopy performed prior to comtemplated fallopian tube reconstructive surgery changed the plan of management of 41% of 44 cases. Of 64 women with a normal hysterogram, 58% were found to have evidence of pelvic disease, and 47% had changes in their management based on the findings at laparoscopy. The specific indications and timing of laparoscopy in relation to the remainder of the infertility evaluation are discussed.

Term pregnancy in an unattached rudimentary uterine horn.

A case of pregnancy in an unattached rudimentary uterine horn is presented. The pregnancy carried to term, ruptured without causing shock, resulted in fetal demise, and was discovered 6 weeks later at laparotomy. Some of the factors associated with rudimentary uterine horns are discussed.

Iatrogenic respiratory distress syndrome. An analysis of obstetric events preceding delivery of infants who develop respiratory distress syndrome.

The obstetric events leading to the birth of infants who developed respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) were evaluated. In a retrospective study of 100 consecutive cases it was determined that untimely or unwarranted physician intervention in the pregnancy was responsible for 15 per cent of cases and possibly responsible for another 18 per cent. Recommendations for prevention of "iatrogenic" RDS are made.

The effect of vaginal lubricants on sperm motility in vitro.

Apart from the documentation of the spermicidal effects of KY Jelly and Surgilube, little information about the effect of vaginal lubricants on sperm motility has been available. Fifteen substances utilizable as vaginal lubricants were therefore tested for their effect on sperm motility in vitro. Petroleum jelly and glycerin had minimal detrimental effects on motility and apparently are the lubricants of choice when an infertility problem exists.

Dermatitis from neutral red therapy of herpes genitalis.

A case of contact dermatitis from neutral red dye applied for treatment of herpes genitalis is presented. A review of the literature revealed 5 other patients with a similar reaction. We suggest that neutral red dye treatment for herpes should be used with caution in patients with an allergic history.
