We report a patient with systemic sporotrichosis and osteomyelitis without concomitant suppurative arthritis. To our knowledge this is the first such documented occurrence of hematogenous osteomyelitis in the systemic form of the disease. It was diagnosed by radionuclide bone scintigraphy and radiography and confirmed by biopsy.

Rats were trained to shuttle between two selected ("ON") arms of a Y maze, to obtain electrical stimulation of the medial forebrain bundle. Each shuttle response was rewarded with a brief pulse train. Repetitive entries into the same "ON" arm were not rewarded, nor were entries made into the third ("OFF") arm. Every 67s, stimulation was made available from a different pair of arms. Test sessions lasted for 80 min, beginning immediately after SC injection. Undrugged subjects responded faster, and with a greater proportion of rewarded responses, the higher the stimulation current. In non-tolerant rats, nicotine (0-0.4 mg/kg) depressed responding and induced ataxia shortly after injection; from 40 min, nicotine increased low rates of responding but decreased high rates. All these effects were dose-dependent. Mecamylamine (2.0 mg/kg) prevented the initial depressant action. With repeated daily injections of nicotine (0.4 mg/kg), a marked stimulant action emerged which replaced the initial depressant action, and this was dose-dependent. However, responding was increased by nicotine even when brain stimulation was not available ("time-out"). In contrast, an additional "rate-free" index based on discrimination showed that nicotine did not augment the rewarding properties of the brain stimulation.
"This paper has examined the impact of climate on migration. It has compared the results that are obtained when various indicators of climatic conditions, both those which have been used in the literature and those which have not, are included in a regression used to explain migration behavior. The results suggest that individuals do indeed consider climatic conditions in different areas when deciding where to live; people generally prefer areas which have moderate climates to areas which have either extremely hot or extremely cold climates. The results also indicate that the climate variables which yield the best results are generally those which have not been used in the literature." The study is based on U.S. data concerning in-migration to 36 SMSAs between 1960 and 1970.
Alkaline phosphatase, confined to myoepithelial cells and blood capillaries in rat submandibular salivary gland (SSG), may participate in the regulation of salivary flow. To determine whether the alkaline phosphatase of SSG has unique properties, comparative kinetic and inhibition studies on enzymes from SSG, intestine and kidney were performed. The Km values (at optimal pH for each tissue) of 0.34, 0.55 and 0.49 mM with p-nitrophenylphosphate for the enzymes from SSG, kidney and small intestine respectively were similar. However, in the presence of cadmium the Ki values of 0.08 and 0.12 microM for the enzymes from SSG and kidney respectively were different from the value of 1.86 microM for the enzyme from small intestine. Differences in Ki values suggest differences in biochemical properties between the enzyme from small intestine and that isolated from SSG or kidney.
The nicotine discriminative stimulus (cue) has been used to characterize further the underlying receptor mechanisms. Rats were trained to discriminate the effects of nicotine in a standard, two-bar operant conditioning procedure with food reinforcement. Mecamylamine blocked both the discriminative effect of nicotine and the reducing effect on the response-rate. The block of the discriminative effect could not be overcome by increasing the dose of nicotine, whereas the block of the reducing effect on the response-rate could be reversed. Mecamylamine was effective when administered by either the subcutaneous or the intraventricular route, but hexamethonium was inactive by both routes. Mecamylamine, but not hexamethonium, blocked the discriminative effect of the nicotinic cholinergic agonist, cytisine. Methergoline did not block the discriminative effects of nicotine, even in doses considerably larger than those which blocked the discriminative effects of the 5-HT agonist, quipazine. Mecamylamine did not block the effects of quipazine. The results are consistent with the view that the nicotinic cue is mediated primarily through cholinergic receptors, and that 5-HT mechanisms are not involved. The block of the quipazine cue supports the view that the discriminative effects of this drug are mediated through 5-HT receptors.
Recent experiments have shown that 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3-like material is produced in cultured nonrenal cells and may be present in the sera of anephric patients. We reexamined the question of whether 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 can be synthesized extrarenally in the rat in vivo. To intact, sham-operated, ureter-ligated, or acutely nephrectomized vitamin D-deficient rats raised on a diet normal in calcium and phosphorus, we gave a physiologic dose of high-specific-activity 25-hydroxy-[3H]vitamin D3 (3.6-3.8 microCi; approximately equal to 25 pmol per rat). Twenty-four hours later we examined their tissues and plasma for the presence of radiolabeled 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3. Large amounts of radioactivity that behaved chromatographically as identical with authentic 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 were present in the plasma, bone, and intestine of the intact, sham-operated, or ureter-ligated rats. However, no radioactivity eluting in a manner similar to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 was found in plasma, bone, or intestine of acutely nephrectomized rats. We conclude that, in the acutely nephrectomized living rat, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 is not present in plasma, bone, or intestine in quantities detectable by the sensitive techniques we have used. No conversion of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 was observed during a 24-hr period after nephrectomy of vitamin D-deprived rats. This fact casts doubt upon the significance of the in vitro production of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 by nonrenal cells as an in vivo phenomenon.
Two cases of unilateral septic sacro-iliitis are reported. Importance of the anterior view of sacroiliac joints on the radionuclide bone scan is stressed. Limitation of the posterior view in evaluation of sacroiliac joints may lead to misdiagnosis and false negative results in unilateral sacro-illiac disease.

Autophosphorylation by [gamma-32P]ATP of erythrocyte membranes from controls, psoriatic patients and patients with skin disorders other than psoriasis was compared by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Compared with controls, membranes from psoriatic patients showed significantly less 32P incorporation in the band 2 region (nomenclature of Fairbanks et al., 1971). In addition, psoriasis and some of the other skin diseases examined displayed decreased phosphorylation in the region of bands 2.9-3 and 4.5-4.8. A new polypeptide band in the 18-20,000 dalton region was also observed in the diseases examined. Altered epidermal plasma membranes have been implicated in the pathogenesis of psoriasis, and our findings suggest the defective plasma membranes may be a generalized phenomenon in this disorder.
