[Topical differences in estrogen receptor content of primary breast cancer].

In 50 primary cancers of the mammary gland, tissue samples from three different parts of each tumor were analyzed for estrogen content by agar gel electrophoresis. In 12 tumors receptor-rich and receptor-poor zones were detected within the tumor for the 4-s fraction, and in 11 tumors for the 8-s fraction. Confidence limits (99%) indicate that these findings might range from 10.4% to 42.5% for the 4-s fraction, and 10.2%-44.1% for the 8-s fraction.

[Results of an interdisciplinary study on the value of contact thermography in the diagnosis of breast disease (author's transl)].

An interdisciplinary study was carried out to determine the accuracy of contact thermography in the detection of breast cancer. 200 patients were examined in form of a blind test, the mammographic and clinical findings being listed separately and inaccessible to the thermography team. The findings obtained on contact thermography also were listed separately and afterwards compared with the clinical and mammographic findings. 50 out of these 200 cases required histological clarification, which revealed 24 carcinomas and 26 benign conditions of the breast. Mammography and contact thermography both failed to detect 3 out of the 24 carcinomas, clinical examination gave a false negative result in 2 cases. Therefore, in the present case material, the accuracy of mammography and contact thermography is equal and enables us to state that the combination of clinical examination and contact thermography of the breast is of high accuracy and suited for routine mass screening programmes to enable the detection of breast disease without radiation exposure.

[The influence of vitamin a, gentamicin and anoxaemia on urinary enzyme excretion (author's transl)].

The excretion patterns of several urinary enzymes were investigated in the following four experimental groups of Wistar rats and compared with the normal range of each urinary enzyme studied. One group received vitamin A in high dosage; a second group was given vitamin A before and after bilateral clamping of the renal artery for 30 minutes; in the third group the renal arteries were clamped for 30 or 60 minutes; the last group of experimental animals received first low (2mg/kg, 4mg/kg) and subsequently high doses (100 mg/kg) of gentamicin. Vitamin A administration produced no increase in urinary enzyme activity, even in the group of rats with ischaemically-damaged kidneys, where ischaemia (clampin of the arteries) was responsible per se for an increase in enzyme excretion. With low doses of gentamicin the urinary enzymes remained within normal limits, but increased immediately to significantly pathological values after the first dose 100 mg/kg gentamicin.

[Congenital polyfibromatosis: clinical and genetic studies].

Clinical and genetic investigations were performed on seven members of a family suffering from multiple hereditary fibromatosis. These studies indicate that the responsible gene appears to be coupled and transmitted with that of the rhesus system, located at chromosome one. The diagnosis, differential diagnosis and therapy, as well as histological alterations are pointed out and the importance of hormonal factors is discussed.

[Concentration course of Na-Penicillin G in wound secretions following vascular surgery].

After infusion of 10 and 20 M.I.U. of Na-penicilline G, the concentrations in serum, wound exudation, and urine were analysed, at equal points of time, following vascular reconstruction; pharmacokinetic data were calculated as well. The importance of local concentration of antibiotics for therapy and prevention of infections is emphasized - according to pharmacokinetics - in relation to the blood level. Simultaneously, the influence of pathological changes is discussed and represented by a brief case follow-up.

Neurotoxicity and CSF level of three penicillins.

The electrocortical activity and the antibiotic concentration in serum and CSF were investigated in rabbits after i.v. administration of benzylpenicillin, ampicillin and oxacillin. In contrast to ampicillin and oxacillin, benzylpenicillin induced a pronounced epileptogenic activity. The different epileptogenic activity of the three penicillins cannot be explained by the difference in the CSF level of these agents only. The intensity of the epileptogenic activity and the CSF level after benzylpenicillin administration were markedly influenced by the experimental procedure in that curarized animals exhibited both higher CSF levels and more intense seizure activities than non-curarized animals. Factors are discussed which may be responsible for the different neurotoxic potency of the three penicillins and for the dependence of the benzylpenicillin-induced seizure intensity on the experimental procedure.

[Studies in the diagnosis of breast disease (author's transl)].

The relative diagnostic accuracy of clinical examination, mammography, thermography and ultrasound was investigated in a comparative study. Mammography proved to be the most accurate diagnostic method, followed by clinical examination, thermography and ultrasound. Whereas in cases of advanced cancer (T2 to T4 tumour diameter greater than 2 cm) the correct diagnosis was made most reliably by clinical examination, mammography was superior to all other procedures in T1 tumours and in impalpable tumours. In our opinion thermography and ultrasound should be excluded for routine use or as a screening test because of the high false negative results. It is, however, noteworthy, that small intraparenchymal cysts can be detected and localized by ultrasound in a very high percentage of cases.

[Modern methods in the diagnosis of breast disease (author's transl)].

240 patients attending a surgical clinic for breast diseases were examined clinically and subjected to mammography, thermography and ultrasonic investigation. Histological reports are available in 98 cases, enabling an evaluation of the accuracy of the used diagnostic methods. The most efficient diagnostic method is X-ray mammography, followed by thermography and ultrasound diagnosis, but these procedures are still fraught with methodological and technical problems.
