[Hormonal pattern in premenopauseal cycles (author's transl)].

By serial determinations of plasma LH, FSH, progesterone and estradiol-17beta as well as total gonadotropines, total estrogens and pregnanediol in 24 h urine samples it was possible to classify 19 cycles of premenopauseal women, aged 44-50 years, into two groups. The first group showed ovulatory cycles with partially shortened hyperthermic phases in the basal body temperature curves, slightly elevated levels of FSH and diminuished estradiol-17beta, pregnanediol and progesterone concentration, indicating the beginning insufficiency of the ovarian function. The second group was characterized by several times above normal elevated FSH and somewhat less elevated LH levels significantly lowered estradiol-17beta and only basal progesterone and pregnanediol concentrations. The ovulatory transitional cycles explicated a nearly normal fluctuation pattern which was completely abolished in the anovulatory cycles.

[Acute primary plasma cell leukemia (author's transl)].

The sudden onset of plasma cell leukemia with IgG-lambda-paraproteinaemia is reported in a 59-year-old patient. In the year before clinical manifestation of the disease the patient was examined and treated for a duodenal ulcer and a head injury on three separate occasions in different wards of the hospital without detection of any sign of disease of the haemopoetic system. The clinical features and course of the disease resembled those of acute leukaemia, the maximum percentage of plasma cells in the peripheral blood being 72 and in the bone marrow 98. Osteolytic bone lesions were not observed and there was no renal insufficiency. Therapy with mephelan-prednisolone and cyclophosphamide-prednisolone was not successful in influencing the fatal outcome of the disease.

The frequency of Y chromatin-positive spermatozoa during in vitro penetration tests under various experimental conditions.

Complete analysis were carried out on the semen of 55 subjects. The semen was then investigated by using the fluorescent microscopic technique to determine the percentage proportion of Y chromatin-bearing spermatozoa. After staining with quinacrine mustard, an average Y chromatin frequency of 48.2% +/- 2.9% was recorded. With this spermatozoal material, 139 in vitro penetration tests were carried out with cervical mucus. After penetration there was a small, but statistically significant, increase in the percentage of Y spermatozoa (to 52.7% +/- 3.8%). The figures thus recorded were then correlated under variable experimental conditions in addition to variable semen parameters. The ratio of X:Y spermatozoa was related to the duration of the penetration tests, varying temperatures during the penetration, varying acid values of semen and cervical secretion, and also to the value of sperm motility in the semen analysis and to cervical factors. None of the above variables had any measurable influence on the percentage distribution of X and Y spermatozoa during in vitro penetration.

Renal function after ligation of the left renal vein.

In animal experiments the ligation of the left renal vein after nephrectomy on the right side and the ligation of the suprarenal inferior vena cava is explored by four different methods. Degree and length of postoperative renal dysfunction depend on the preliminary ligation or the narrowing of the suprarenal inferior vena cava. The period of adaptation is correlated to the development of a collateral circulation of the left renal vein.

The selection of Y-chromatin positive spermatozoa and subsequent in vitro penetration through cervical mucus.

We carried out a check of Ericsson's data on the possibility of separating out Y-spermatozoa and their selective enrichement. Layers of spermatozoa were laid on BSA media of various concentrations, filtered and the Y-chromatin proportion was determined. The method used was that of fluorochromation with quinacrine mustard. Our selection experiments revealed a lower enrichment effect of Y-chromatin positive spermatozoa than that recorded by Ericsson et al. An average enrichment of 75% was obtained. Modifications carried out with other variants of the BSA gradient overlays achieved varying enrichment effects respectively. In order to check the subsequent progressive motility of the spermatozoa selected, we performed tests on in vitro penetration through cervical mucus, using the previously enriched Y-spermatozoa material. After the in vitro penetration test we were able to investigate the Y-chromatin proportion of a sufficient number of highly mobile spermatozoa after 60-mm penetration per hour. There was no significant change in the enrichment effect of the Y-spermatozoa during the in vitro penetration test.

[Pattern of gonadotropins and ovarian steroids during the menstrual cycle in adolescence (author's transl)].

Serial determinations of FSH, LH, estradiol-17 beta and progesterone in plasma and of total gonadotropins, total estrogens and pregnanediol in urine were performed in 10 adolescent girls between 15 and 19 years of age. Two types of menstrual cycles could be distinguished. The first type is characterized by a nearly normal pattern of FSH, while a preovulatory rise of estradiol-17 beta and an LH-peak is still missing. Only few days prior to menstrual bleeding a small rise of estradiol and progesterone in plasma as well as of estrogens and pregnanediol in urine can be seen, being equivalent to a short luteinization of the follicle without ovulation taking place. The second type already shows all criteria of a regular ovulatory cycle. However the plasma level of LH, estradiol and progesterone and the excretion of estrogens and pregnanediol are still below the average values of control cycles of adult women. On the basis of the hormonal pattern and a shortened luteal phase, a relative insufficiency of this type of cycles is still evident. These studies demonstrate, that the cyclic ovarian function postmenarchial develops gradually and that the onset of ovulation is a marked step in this development. This process of maturition, which is due to the gradual development of the positive feedback of estrogens on the release of LH by the pituitary gland, allows to distinguish in adolescence between cycles before and after maturition of the feed-back mechanism in the ANS.

Lesional effects of primary cosmic heavy ions on rat brain.

Heavy ions were detected with nuclear emulsions plates fixed on the skulls of 20 rats which were exposed to cosmic rays at an altitude of 32,000 metres. Eight cases are described of correlations between ions tracks and brain lesions. The passage of heavy ions seems to cause functional rather than destructive alterations in the cells. The metabolic disturbances give a dark aspect to the neurons. The lesions generally appear in wide areas around the track and this fact suggests a physiopathological phenomenon of amplification. An evaluation of this biological hazard during flights of long duration at high altitude will be possible when the mechanism of action of heavy ions on nervous tissue is better known, and particularly if experiments carried out in accelerators confirm the small number of results obtained in flight.

Frequency of Y-chromatin bearing spermatozoa in intracervical and intrauterine postcoital tests.

By means of the intracervical Sims-Huhner-test and supplementary to this, the intrauterine postcoital test, the percentages of Y-chromatin-positive spermatozoa was determined after penetration into the cervix and the cavum uteri. A significant rise of the Y-positive sperms after penetration could be observed. There was no influence of certain parameters of the spermiogram upon the relationship of X- to Y-sperms after the PCT. Statistical calculations show the dependences of the positive and negative postcoital tests upon the individual parameters of the cervical factors and the spermiogram.

Serum amylase changes during pregnancy.

Study of the behavior of serum amylase activity in 200 preganant women in various stages of pregnancy indicated that: (1) serum amylase rises gradually during pregnancy until the twenty-fifth week and thereafter falls slightly; (2) serum amylase values may be found in normal pregnant women during the second and third trimesters that exceed those in normal men and nonpregnant women; (3) during the second trimester of pregnancy there may be an alteration in the relative distribution of the pancreatic and salivary-type isoamylases with the salivary type tending to dominate. Knowledge of these changes is of importance in the clinical assessment of serum amylase values in pregnant women complaining of abdominal pain and other symptoms suggestive of complicating acute pancreatitis. An explanation for the observed changes is not readily available and further study is required.
