Two hundred term healthy neonates were examined and 14 anthropometric measurements were taken in the face and ear region. Difference between the sexes was observed in ear length, ear breadth, and philtrum. Significant correlation was found between ear placement and ear length; and outer and inner canthal distances (p less than 0.001). The paper provides baselines data for facial growth measurements and discusses the utility of these measurements in detecting dysmorphogenesis in neonates.

Supplementary foods suited for weaning and feeding of infants were developed, using locally available foods in Punjab. Methods of cooking employed were those used commonly by low and middle income families. Cereal-pulse combinations along with some sesame seed and groundnuts were used to enhance the protein quality. The ratio used was such that the preparation did not deviate much from the accepted tastes of the population. Fresh green vegetables were also used. Fifteen recipes were standardized and acceptability trials carried out with mothers and infants of the different socio-economic groups. The preparations were highly accepted by all. Analysis of these were done for protein, calories, vitamin C and iron to see their contribution to the diet. The cost per serving of each recipe for various age groups was worked out and it was observed that at a very low cost a substantial amount of the above nutrients could be given to the infants by including these preparations in their diets. Education of mothers in making these recipes will go a long way towards popularizing such formulations.
Early diagnosis of neonatal septicemia is a vexing problem because of its non-specific clinical picture. Many of the neonates with septicemia reaching a referral centre have already been exposed to antibiotics and their blood cultures are often sterile. Scarcity of studies evaluating acridine orange-stained buffy coat smears in detecting neonatal septicemia after administration of antibiotics prompted us to undertake this study. The population studied consisted of 34 cases of neonatal septicemia with positive blood cultures and/or positive buffy coat smears (of these 25 had a positive blood culture) and 25 neonates with a clinical course not suggestive of any infection. Venous blood was drawn for culture, preparation of buffy coat smears, blood counts and micro ESR. The culture and smears were repeated after administration of antibiotics for 48-72 h. Acridine orange stain was the most sensitive test and was significantly more sensitive than Gram's stain (p < 0.005). After the administration of antibiotics, acridine orange was significantly more sensitive than Gram's stain and blood culture (p < 0.05).
About 12,000 Americans are diagnosed with malignant astrocytoma each year. Despite surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, the prognosis of these patients remains poor. Targeted toxins based on the identification of novel antigens or receptors provide a promising new approach to treating cancer. We have identified one such cell surface protein in the form of interleukin (IL)-4 receptors (IL-4R) on human malignant astrocytoma. Normal brain tissues from frontal cortex and temporal lobe cortex do not express IL-4R. To target IL-4R, we generated a chimeric fusion protein composed of IL-4 and Pseudomonas exotoxin (IL4-PE). This toxin is highly cytotoxic to IL-4R-bearing human brain cancer cells. Preclinical toxicologic experiments were performed in mice, rats, and guinea pigs to determine an maximum tolerated dose. Intrathecal administration in cynomolgus monkeys produced high cerebrospinal fluid levels without any central nervous system or other abnormalities. When IL4-PE was injected into the right frontal cortex of rats, localized necrosis was observed at 1,000 but not < or =100 microg/ml doses. Intravenous administration of this biologic to monkeys produced reversible grade 3 or grade 4 elevations of hepatic enzymes in a dose-dependent manner. These results indicate that localized administration can produce nontoxic levels of IL4-PE that may have significant activity against astrocytoma. In vivo experiments with nude mice have demonstrated that IL4-PE has significant antitumor activity against human glioblastoma tumor model. Intratumor administration of IL4-PE has been initiated for the treatment of malignant astrocytoma in a phase I clinical trial.
We have previously reported on the expression of interleukin-4 receptor (IL-4R) on many solid cancer cell lines. In the present study, we have examined the expression of IL-4R on head and neck cancers in situ by immunohistochemistry. Seven primary squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck region were stained by a monoclonal antibody to human IL-4Rp140 protein (M-57). We report that all squamous cell carcinoma samples were positively stained although at variable intensity with anti-IL-4R antibody. Tumors stained with IgG control did not show any staining. On the other hand, six benign lesions from the same anatomical area showed faint or no staining at all. Three uterine endometrium samples were also negative for the IL-4R expression. In contrast to published contrary results, we did not observe any effect of IL-4 on the proliferation of four squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck (SCCHN) cell lines examined. These results demonstrate that human squamous carcinoma of the head and neck express IL-4R, which could be targeted for diagnosis and therapy by anti-IL-4 receptor antibody fused to toxins or radionuclides or alternatively by IL-4 toxins.
