Metabolic disease in mental retardation: a study in Texas.

Reported are the results of a study of patients admitted to the State Schools for the Mentally Retarded in Texas, over a two-year period from 1968-1970. Of 2029 cases, 185 were found on a detection battery screening to have possible metabolic disease. The report summarizes the findings on 93 cases studied in the metabolic ward at the Texas Research Institute.

Central nervous system manifestations of chickenpox.

A study of 57 cases of affection of the central nervous system associated with chickenpox diagnosed and treated at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto between 1956 and 1967, inclusive, is presented. The commonest type, the cerebellar variety (50%), had an excellent prognosis. In the next commonest, the cerebral type (40%), the mortality rate was 35% but there was a low incidence of permanent sequelae in the surviving patients. A small group classed as aseptic meningitis was defined and one case of myelitis was reviewed.

Characterization of messenger-like ribonucleic acid from Saccharomyces cerevisiae by the use of chromatography on methylated albumin-kieselguhr.

Chromatography on methylated albumin-kieselguhr of RNA from Saccharomyces cerevisiae was used to separate stable RNA from a tenaciously bound DNA-like RNA fraction. The tenaciously bound RNA, which was eluted with a dilute solution of sodium dodecyl sulphate, was characterized as messenger-like RNA by its sedimentation behaviour, nucleotide composition, lack of methylated bases and labelling kinetics. Chromatography of purified ribosomal RNA indicated a minor contamination of the tenaciously bound fraction with ribosomal RNA. On the other hand, a large portion of pulse-labelled polyribosomal RNA from protoplasts of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was tenaciously bound to the columns. The ;chase' of isotopic label from the messenger-like RNA was found to be retarded during inhibition of protein synthesis both by cycloheximide and by starvation for a carbon source.
