Measuring water content of feces by the Karl Fischer method.

We describe a technique for measuring the water content of stools by the Karl Fischer method. The analysis is based on removal of water into a mixture of methanol/chloroform (1/2), after dispersion of the stool by sonication in presence of solvent. An aliquot of the solution thus obtained is placed in themeasuring cell of a Karl Fischer apparatus and then analyzed in the classic way. We further describe the advantages of this method (odorless, precise, reproducible) in contrast to other current methods. In addition the same organic solution can also be used in determining the lipid content of stools.

A new cholangiography catheter.

A new cholangiography catheter has been evaluated in 66 consecutive gall bladder operations. The catheter has an integral moulded cone shaped locking attachment and a tap to reduce the risk of air bubbles entering the biliary tree. The catheter coulc not be introduced into the duct in 10% of patients. In the remainder both surgeon and radiologist were satisfied with the cholangiogram.

Muscular cysticercosis from Taenia ovis in feedlot lambs.

From a Colorado enterprise annually fattening about 50,000 lambs, 3,664 animals were examined for muscular cysticercosis. Of the total number, 406 (11.1%) were parasitized, wheras an estimated 0.1% of Colorado lamb carcasses are infected. Of the infected lambs, 60% had cardiac lesions. Two types of cysticerci-viable and degenerated-were found. The lambs probably acquired infection from grazing summer ranges and pastures where coyotes or dogs infected with Taenia ovis contaminated the forage.

Cysticercosis from Taenia hydatigena in feedlot lambs.

A feedlot enterprise fattened 50,000 lambs from August, 1973, through May, 1974. Of those that died during that period, 96 were necropsied; of this number 27 (28%) were infected with cysticeri. The parasites produced bore channels in livers and bladder worms on viscera. Some lesions were assessable for their duration of infection.

A mathematical single-pool model for short time haemodialysis.

The objective was to reduce treatment time while the average concentration of all molecular sizes was maintained equal to that in a standard treatment. A nomogram based on the one-pool patient-dialyser system has been devised. The patient variables are presented in dimensionless forms, thus making on diagram suffice for all patients and all molecular sizes. Seven patients were first observed during a standard programme and later during an individually calculated short-time programme. The clinical parameters indicated equal treatment. The method was practical enough for clinical use.

Isolation of protective somatic antigen from Vibrio cholerae (Ogawa) ribosomal preparations.

Ribosomal preparations from Vibrio cholerae Ogawa and Inaba are protective immunogens for mice challenged with either serotype. Column chromatography of ribosomal fractions separated protective antigen from the ribosomes. The antigen is a heterogeneous colloid which contains protein, lipid, and carbohydrate in the ratio 3:1:1. Amino acid composition is that of a slightly acidic protein with no unusual complement of amino acids. The lipid component consists of several longchain fatty acids and of phosphatidyl ethanolamine. The major sugars identified were glucose and galactose. The colloid can be dissolved by treatment with chelating agents and sodium dodecyl sulfate. Purification of the solubilized material or of the colloid was unsuccessful.
