Three-dimensional lithographic model building from volume data sets.

Computed tomographic images of a dry human skull and an in-situ knee joint were used to construct solid three-dimensional polymer models using stereolithographic techniques that have been introduced recently into the manufacturing industry. The stereolithographic technique makes use of a computer-steered narrow laser beam to solidify the model within a bath of liquid photocurable polymer. The method does not suffer from the cutting-tool size and path constraints encountered in the more commonly used process of machining the models from a solid block of foam.

An epidemiological and clinical study of snake-bites in childhood.

The last decade has seen major changes in the first-aid management of elapid snake-bites and the introduction of a new venom-detection kit which can identify the genus of medically-important snakes. In the light of these developments, we report a 10-year study that comprised 218 consecutive children who were admitted to hospital in southeast Queensland, after a confirmed or a suspected snake-bite. One-third (34.9%) of victims were preschool children (zero to five years of age) but the highest "at-risk" group comprised prepubescent boys. In 70% of cases, the bite was on a single lower limb. Of the 218 children who were admitted to hospital, 42% manifested local or systemic symptoms that were consistent with a confirmed snake-bite, irrespective of whether or not the species of snake was venomous. A positive identification of the genus of the offending snake was established in 18.8% of cases. In 35.8% of cases, the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories' Venom Detection Kit was used in an attempt to identify the involved snake, with 10 (4.6% of all cases) positive test-results. We have found that appropriate first aid was applied in the field in a maximum of 18% of cases. Antivenom was administered to 14 children, seven of whom received polyvalent antivenom; one child manifested a severe anaphylactic reaction. There were no fatalities in this series, and no permanent morbidity.

Neuronal properties of neuroectodermal tumors in vitro.

Cell lines of medulloblastoma, retinoblastoma, and neuroblastoma, three childhood tumors derived from neuroectoderm, have been compared with respect to their neuronal properties. Neuroblastoma, a neural crest derivative, has been shown to express specific neuronal enzymes and the action potential sodium ionophore. Cell lines of medulloblastoma and retinoblastoma also express neuronal specific enzymes and therefore are considered to be of neuroblastic origin.

Munchausen's syndrome: an unusual case.

Unlike most Munchausen patients, Miss A. was willing to define herself as a psychiatric, as well as a medical-surgical patient. Consequently, it was possible to engage her in therapy in which observation could occur. It was found, also, that Miss A. had used eye drops to dilate her pupils to simulate a neurological disorder and had accidentally induced an anticholinergic delirium.

Anomalous stress reactions in patients suffering from depression and anxiety.

An experiment is reported in which the forearm muscle blood flow of a group of patients with mixed depressions is compared with that of a group of patients with anxiety states. The blood flow was measured under relaxed conditions and during the presentation of a noise `stress'. The measurements obtained under stressed conditions show that, while the blood flow of those with anxiety states fell with repetition of the stress noise, that of the depressive patients increased. A similar pattern was shown by the relaxed measurements but here the difference was not statistically significant. There was also suggestion that stress produced a fall in blood flow in depressive subjects and an increase in patients with anxiety states. These results tend to support the hypothesis that depressive patients show something akin to a freeze response to stress, while patients with anxiety states show an arousal response.

Child sexual abuse: helping children and their families.

The reality of child sexual abuse has only recently been accepted by professionals. Previously, treatment strategies were aimed at adult survivors rather than at children. Treatment programmes for children have a short history and their long-term effects cannot be validated yet, although some attempts have been made (Bentovim et al, 1987).
