I hope that this brief review has been sufficient to prove the importance that looking at patients' work should have in the investigation of suspected occupational dermatoses. For the dermatologist subspecializing in occupational cases, visits are, I believe, a continuing necessity in the weekly routine. For all other dermatologists, even occasional visits can make an important contribution to the accuracy with which diagnoses and advice on prevention can be provided in suspected cases of occupational dermatoses.

Allergic contact dermatitis is reported in 5 machine operatives working with a cutting oil containing an epoxy compound used as a stabilizer. Positive patch test reactions to this compound were obtained in all 5 men and were negative in 25 controls.

Case reports of 3 chemists who worked in a laboratory where heterocyclic chloromethyl compounds, used as intermediates in the synthesis of a histamine antagonist, were being prepared, are here presented. The results of suitable patch tests which were applied are reported and it is concluded from the results that 3 chemical intermediates were responsible for the allergic contact dermatitis in the 3 cases.
We report 3 cases of allergic contact dermatitis behind the ears from wearing the same brand of industrial safety spectacles. In each case, a positive patch test was obtained with scrapings of the plastic frame. In 2 cases further patch tests with constituents of the plastic were carried out; positive patch tests were obtained with phenyl salicylate. Phenyl salicylate is used as an ultraviolet inhibitor in some cellulose acetate butyrate and cellulose acetate propionate formulae. It has previously been reported as a contact sensitizer from its use as a sun screen in a lip salve. Positive patch test reactions were also obtained variously in these patients with balsam of Peru, resorcinol monobenzoate, and epoxy resin.
Low-humidity dermatoses arise in the work place as a result of low water content of the air. At a relative humidity of 10% or less, the horny layer becomes rigid and brittle. The combination of low humidity, high temperature, and, frequently, rapid air movement dehydrates the outer stratum corneum. This leads to pruritus and, finally, to low-grade eczema. A roughened, scaly stratum corneum becomes more susceptible to mechanical trauma. Microtrauma from small particles can aggravate the dry scaly dermatosis. Low-humidity lesions resolve quickly with the simple expedients of routine use of moisturizers and/or raising the relative humidity.
