The occurrence of ixodid ticks on wild mink Mustela vision in England and Wales.

Four species of ticks found to infest 1391 American mink (Mustela vison) in Britain in five years were, in declining order of frequency, Ixodes hexagonus, Ixodes canisuga, Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes acuminatus. Ixodes hexagonus and I. canisuga occurred on 40% and 2.5% of mink respectively. Infestation rates (the proportion of infested mink) of adult females, nymphs and larvae were similar and tended to be lower in summer. The distribution of infestation size (the number of ticks per host) for adult females describes a negative binomial. The mean infestation size of nymphs varied with the sex of the host was 5.2 for males and 4.2 for females. Mink are competent hosts for I.hexagonus.

Efficacy of DMP 840: a novel bis-naphthalimide cytotoxic agent with human solid tumor xenograft selectivity.

DMP 840, a novel bis-naphthalimide, was evaluated for antitumor efficacy in several tumor models in mice. As measured by a tumor growth inhibition assay, i.v. administration of DMP 840 to athymic nude mice at doses at or below the maximum tolerated dose resulted in curative activity against four human solid tumor xenografts, MX-1 mammary carcinoma, CX-1 and DLD-2 colon adenocarcinomas, and LX-1 lung carcinoma, producing full or incomplete regressions and/or percent tumor growth inhibition of > or = 96%. The efficacy of DMP 840 in the models was dose dependent. The activity of DMP 840 against the human tumors surpassed that demonstrated by several clinically used and investigational anticancer agents. In long-term growth delay studies, DMP 840 induced full regressions in 20 of 20 mice bearing MX-1 tumors, and tumors in one-half of these mice remained regressed for over 5 months. In addition, DMP 840 was curative against exponentially growing DLD-2 tumors staged at 500 mg and MX-1 tumors staged at 1000 mg. The bis-naphthalimide was equally efficacious when administered i.v. or i.p. but was slightly less active after oral dosing. Against both the MX-1 mammary carcinoma and the DLD-2 colon adenocarcinoma, some measure of schedule dependence was observed; the optimum schedule was daily for 9 days. Against L1210 and P388 murine leukemias, DMP 840 demonstrated little or no activity and was inactive against B16 murine melanoma. Overall, these results suggest that DMP 840 may be a human solid tumor selective cytotoxic agent.

Home ranges of feral cats at Avonmouth Docks (United Kingdom).

The feral cat population at a 178 ha dockland site was studied for eighteen months using direct observation assisted by radio-tracking. Though food appeared to be abundant and widely distributed, the population density was low (10-15 adults/km2). Home ranges were similar for males and females, and were much smaller (15 +/- 17 ha and 10 +/- 7 ha, respectively) than would be expected from the low density. The implications of the findings for feral cat control were discussed, with particular emphasis on rabies emergency measures.

Spinal anaesthesia for caesarean section: comparison of 22-gauge and 25-gauge Whitacre needles with 26-gauge Quincke needles.

We have studied 150 women undergoing elective Caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia. They were allocated randomly to have a 22-gauge Whitacre, a 25-gauge Whitacre or a 26-gauge Quincke needle inserted into the lumbar subarachnoid space. The groups were compared for ease of insertion, number of attempted needle insertions before identification of cerebrospinal fluid, quality of subsequent analgesia and incidence of postoperative complications. There were differences between groups, but they did not reach statistical significance. Postdural puncture headache (PDPH) was experienced by one mother in the 22-gauge Whitacre group, none in the 25-gauge Whitacre group and five in the 26-gauge Quincke group. Five of the six PDPH occurred after a single successful needle insertion. Seven of the 15 mothers in whom more than two needle insertions were made experienced backache, compared with 12 of the 129 receiving two or less (P < 0.001). We conclude that the use of 22- and 25-gauge Whitacre needles in elective Caesarean section patients is associated with a low incidence of PDPH and that postoperative backache is more likely when more than two attempts are made to insert a spinal needle.

Where there is no laryngoscope.

In hospitals of the developing world where financial constraints limit the procurement of even the most basic medical equipment, improvisation has become important and necessary. We describe a reliable, low-cost, locally produced laryngoscope constructed out of wood.

Records of anoplocephaline cestodes from wild rabbits and hares collected throughout Great Britain.

Four species of anoplocephaline cestodes were found in wild rabbits collected throughout Britain in 1962 and 1972, i.e; since the great reduction in rabbit numbers following the introduction of myxomatosis, in 1953. They were Cittotaenia pectinata (Goeze, 1782), C. denticulata (Rudolphi, 1804), C. ctenoides (Rhiehm, 1881) and Andrya cuniculi (Blanchard 1891). C. pectinata and C. denticulata were relatively common with a respective prevalence of 25% and 8% in two samples totalling 442 rabbits and were widely distributed throughout Britain. C. ctenoides was rate and only recorded from seven localities, although these were spread throughout Britain A. cuniculi was also rate being known from four counties in England and five islands off southern England and Wales. C. pectinata was the only species found in hares and its prevalence was low at 6%. The records are shown plotted on to 10 km square distribution maps.
