The tibio-fibular interosseous membrane was studied in the scanning electron microscope. It is made up of two fibrous networks, a major one composed of large diameter fibres aggregated into bundles and a fine filamentous network, without a preferred orientation, between these main fibre bundles. Mechanical studies have shown that the interosseous membrane is stronger, but less extensible, parallel to the direction of the main fibre bundles which, therefore, probably have a load bearing function.
The bending of isolated human cadaveric tibiae in the antero-posterior and medio-lateral planes was studied. It was found that the mean bending stiffness in the antero-posterior plan was 5.989 Nm/mm and in the medio-lateral plane 3.588 Nm/mm.
The ends of ruptured human tendons have been examined by scanning electron microscopy. The collagen fibres taper markedly, often leading up to a coiled segment or a knot of collagen at the point of rupture. This tapering of the collagen fibres was shown to be typical of denatured collagen by its selective removal by trypsin digestion. This denaturation caused by mechanical rupture was shown to be localized at the point of rupture, the rest of the collagen fibre remaining in the native state. The possible significance of these observations to the healing of ruptured tendons is discussed.

Twenty patients at the Northern Regional Spinal Injury Unit received carbon fibre implants inserted into the sites of previously closed pressure sores or threatened pressure sores. The most common site was over the ischium, but some have also been inserted at the trochanteric area, the sacral area and also over bony protuberances of the leg. Seven implants from four patients had to be removed because of damage or infection. Sixteen patients with 18 implants have proceeded with no recurrence for a period of 4-8 years.
The generation and transmission of forces under the foot was investigated in 67 normal subjects and 124 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The investigations included the measurement of static foot-ground pressure patterns with a Pedobarograph and the assessment of transmission of maximum load during the gait cycle with instrumented force sandals. Information from both sources was compared with the patient's own subjective assessment of pain and walking ability. Static pressures accurately reflect the position of abnormal pressure generation.
A 3-component sliding meniscus knee prosthesis was tested mechanically to evaluate the direct loads and the anteroposterior and mediolateral bending moments on the prosthetic components during the loading phase on a pendulum prosthesis testing machine. The bending moments changed with variation of the component positions. Tilting the tibial plateau produced the greatest change in lateral bending moment on the femoral component but alteration in plateau rotation or femoral tilting produced little change in the low values of the 2 bending moments. It is necessary to ensure that the tibial component is positioned horizontally on the tibial plateau, but it is not necessary to be concerned about the angle of the femoral component to the vertical or the misalignment rotationally of the tibial component. The load ideally passes through the condylar component to the tibia much more centrally than if it were a constrained prosthesis system during the loading range, reducing the likelihood of displacement of the 2 fixed components.
