This study tested bilingual subjects' interaction of knowledge of both languages in comprehension. Spanish-English bilinguals and English monolinguals heard 36 sentences, all spoken in English. Twelve were normal English sentences, 12 contained Spanish word order, and 12 contained word-for-word translations of Spanish idioms. The dependent measures was performance on a phoneme-monitoring task; subjects pressed a button when they heard a particular phoneme within each sentence. Immediately following each sentence, subjects wrote down as much of that sentence as they could recall. Results showed that bilingual subjects pressed the button equally quickly for all sentences, but monolinguals were faster for control sentences than for idiom-translations, which was interpreted to mean that a knowledge of Spanish helped the bilinguals in processing the test items semantically.
Changes in extracellular ion activities were measured during partial ischaemia of the cerebral cortex of primates anaesthetized with alpha-chloralose. Triple-barrelled, double-ion-sensitive microelectrodes were used to measure the extracellular potassium (Kc) and calcium (Cac) activity at the same point simultaneously. The ion changes were related to local cerebral blood flow, and it was shown that at a blood flow of approximately 10 ml 100 g-1 min-1, there is a threshold below which ion homeostasis is disturbed. This is associated with a dramatic rise in Ke and fall in Cae. Cae falls from a normal value of 1.31 +/- 0.1 mM to approximately 0.28 mM in densely ischaemic tissue. In ischaemia, Ke reaches 13.4 +/- 3.8 mM before Cae begins to fall. The fall in Cae, although related to reduced blood flow, is closely associated with and follows the rise in Ke. The change in Cae is probably due to an increase in membrane permeability, as a result of either depolarisation or a critical lowering of cellular energy reserves.
Pneumonia due to serotypes D-K of Chlamydia trachomatis occurred in a 10-week-old baby, who had been successfully treated with chlortetracycline eye ointment for chlamydial ophthalmia neonatorum, and in a 7-week-old baby being treated for the same condition. Clinical signs of pneumonia were minimal. Such chlamydial pneumonia in infants must be under-diagnosed. Infants with chlamydial ophthalmia neonatorum are now routinely treated with erythromycin suspension by mouth in addition to chlortetracycline eye ointment.
The need to be held has been observed to be related to various moods and personality dimensions. It is unclear, however, whether this need functions as a state or trait variable. Data were collected from 85 pregnant subjects at 4 months, 9 months, and 6 weeks postpartum. Measures of the need to be held, neuroticism, relationship with parents, self-concept and maternal attachment were used to determine whether the need to be held is a trait or state variable, as well as to explore the etiology of the need to be held. Data were analyzed by a trend analysis of repeated measures and analysis of variance. Results showed that the need to be held is a trait variable in that it did not change throughout pregnancy and is related to the predisposition of depression. The etiology of the need to be held remains open for investigation.
A case of an 18-year-old woman with postoperative infectious complications and multiple antibiotic allergies is discussed. The case poses several problems: the selection of an appropriate antibiotic to combat the infection, the persistence of the infection, and the treatment of multiple allergic responses to each of the antibiotic agents chosen.
No reports to date have described apertognathia as an associated finding of cleidocranial dysostosis. The case of a patient with prognathism and apertognathia associated with cleidocranial dysostosis is reported. Periodontal, restorative, prosthetic, and oral surgical services were necessary to rehabilitate this patient orofacially. A review of the syndrome and of the patient's familial history is presented.
A review of the literature and a report of a case of myxoma of the maxilla in a 1-year-old Negro girl have been presented. This case is interesting because of its rarity at this age and its location. Originally, a Weber-Ferguson approach was considered. However, a transoral approach provided excellent access for complete visualization and removal of the tumor. This reinforces the advantages to the patient that result from the cooperation of different surgical services.

The transformation of Wistar rat embryo cells in vitro has been studied in passaged cultures using two criteria for transformation: (1) the ability of cells to form colonies in soft agar and (2) the ability of cells to form tumours in young syngeneic animals. In general there was good correlation between the two criteria. Spontaneous transformation was observed in all untreated cultures by 44 weeks although, by not allowing the cells to become confluent, the tendency was for cultures to transform earlier (i.e. 15-21 weeks). It was noticeable that despite untreated cultures having been in vitro for different lengths of time, most cultures transformed after a similar number of passages (42-50). Treatment of the embryo cells with the alkylating agent nitrosomethylurea (NMU) or benzo(alpha)pyrene (BP) sometimes resulted in transformation after a shorter period in vitro than the controls (minimum 12 weeks) although some treated cultures took longer. Transformed cells produced transplantable fibrosarcomata in syngeneic hosts and those arising from NMU transformed cells were histologically different from those arising from spontaneously transformed cells. The significant of spontaneous transformation in in vitro rat cell transformation systems is discussed.

Five computerized forecasting models were tested with data on daily patient tray demand in a large medical center food service, and results were compared with intuitive forecasts made by the food service supervisor. All five models gave more accurate results than the intuitive procedure; an adaptive exponential smoothing model was most accurate. The effects of model complexity and data storage requirements are discussed, and simple exponential smoothing is suggested for forecasting patient tray demand in this setting.
