A micromethod involving "high-performance" lipid chromatography was developed for determining cholesterol in sera obtained from animals that has been infused with high doses of lipid emulsions. Only 50 micro L of serum is required, and there is no interference from turbidity, bilirubin, fat-soluble vitamins, and sterols. Correlation with the commonly used Abell-Kendall method was good at cholesterol concentrations as great as 10.0 g/L (r = 0.998). The assay is ideal for determinations on samples from pediatric and hyperlipidemic patients. It is particularly useful for monitoring patients on lipid-emulsion therapy and for toxicological studies with small animals.
Soybean plants (Merr) were grown in the field in three plots. Sixteen days after sowing, two plots were covered with blue and red polyvinylchloride filters (0.45 millimeter thick) and one remained uncovered as control. Leaves of all plots were analyzed for total, free, esterified, and glycosidic sterols at two successive stages of plant growth (flowering and podripening).During the growth, total sterols increased in the control sample and under red and blue polyvinylchloride filters. Although free sterol contents were always the highest, the esterified sterols were mainly responsible for this increase. Red and blue polyvinylchloride filters caused a general decrease in the amounts of sterol classes but, during the growth, they caused the largest and most consistent changes. These filters particularly increased sitosterol and decreased stigmasterol. The changes in relative amounts of stigmasterol and sitosterol in soybean leaves might represent an interconversion between these two sterols. There seems to be a general increase-decrease relationship due to light quality.

The protective implications of transfusion hepatitis with respect to cancer are examined. It was observed that three patients suffering from advanced stomach cancer (IIIrd and IVth stage TNM), submitted to palliative surgery, contracted a probably transfusional hepatitis in the postoperative period and thereafter showed remission of the basic disease. Mechanisms of aspecific immunitary activation and/or a direct cytotoxic action on the part of the virus are postulated.

The activity of ADP-ribosyl transferase, an enzyme thought to be involved in several basic functions of the chromatin and in DNA repair, has been investigated in normal and Fanconi's anemia (FA) cells. Fibroblasts and lymphoblasts treated with alkylating (dimethyl sulfate) or cross-linking (mitomycin C, psoralen plus UVA) agents were compared to untreated cells. The basal level of the enzymatic activity was found to be the same in normal and FA cells and the enzymatic response to treatments with DNA-damaging agents was similar in both cell types. Consequently it is unlikely that the molecular defect in FA cells is due to a decreased activity in ADP-ribosyl transferase.
Some experiments of varietal comparison of various cultivars of rapeseed were carried out, determining the productivity, the oil yield and the analytical characteristics of the oils. Moreover the effects of nitrogen fertilization on the seed production and on oil characteristics were tested. The achieved results have pointed out that, referring to the chosen environment, the cv. "Matador" and "Leonessa" show the highest seed and oil productions, whereas oils extracted from the cv. "Sinus", "Erusine" and "Sinera" contain the minor quantities of erucic acid. It seem that nitrogen fertilization exerts no appreciable influence on rapeseed oil composition. The possibility of the utilization of cv. with law content in erucic acid confirms the practical validity of the cultivation of rapeseed as on oil plant.
