Benign cystic teratoma rarely occurs in the omentum. The pathogenesis of the occurrence of this tumor in the omentum is unclear. A case of this entity is presented in which the pathological findings indicate that the omental benign cystic teratoma detached from the left ovary, leaving only a small portion of residual ovary in the left adnexa. Additional findings in this case were a ventral hernia, intra-abdominal adhesions, a second benign cystic teratoma in the right ovary, and a ruptured mucocele of the appendix. The unusual coexistence of these lesions led to the erroneous impression at operation that the omental tumor represented metastatic carcinoma.
Three hundred twenty-seven patients with ovarian carcinoma were compared with matched controls to determine the association of parity and marital status with the development of ovarian cancer. Nulliparous women were found to have 2.31 times the risk of developing ovarian cancer as parous women. Unmarried women had 3 times the risk of developing ovarian cancer, but marital status was not established as a variable independent of parity. Almost 8% of patients with ovarian carcinoma had had hysterectomies when they were over 40 years of age. This study indicates that parity is an important consideration when determining whether a patient is at high risk for the development of ovarian carcinoma. Other epidemiologic variables are discussed in an effort to facilitate the judicious selection of patients for elective oophorectomy at the time of hysterectomy.
Numerous investigators have alluded to an association of cancer of the endometrium and breast. There is no available information relating the histologic forms of cancer of the endometrium to breast cancer. We found ten cases of adenosquamous carcinoma of the endometrium in one tumor registry in a ten year period, 1967-1977. Five of these cases also had breast carcinoma. In three of these cases the breast carcinoma was discovered two to three years after hysterectomy; in one case both tumors were discovered at the same time, and in one case the breast carcinoma antedated the diagnosis of endometrial malignancy by approximately one year. These observations, although from a small number of cases, warrant an expansion of this study in order to determine whether patients with adenosquamous carcinoma of the uterus have a higher risk of developing breast cancer.

Gonadotropic hormones are required for the induction and maintenance of tumors arising in ovaries that have been transplanted to the spleens of gonadectomized mice. The characteristics of gonadotropin receptors for human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG)-luteinizing hormone on cells from these tumors of varying size, age, and morphology have been determined. The specific binding of 125I-labeled HCG to cells obtained by collagenase digestion, 15 to 65 weeks postimplantation from granulosa cell or luteinized cell, or mixed granulosa-luteal tumors was analyzed by Scatchard plot. Neither the size, weight, duration of implantation, nor histological morphology affected the receptor-binding affinity [equilibrium dissociation constant (Kd), 6 X 10(-10) M], and, presumably, the receptor is qualitatively similar. In contrast, the number of HCG receptors per cell increased 17-fold and was related to the degree of morphological luteinization of the tumor. HCG-sensitive adenyl cyclase was also demonstrated and compared to HCG binding in a highly luteinized tumor.
