[Acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis--extended abdominal drainage and perirenal drainage links].

Acute haemorrhagic pancreatitis, when mainly situated in the body and tail of the pancreas, may be associated with abscess formation in the left perirenal region through the radix mesosoli transversi. Next to the extensive drainage of the abdomen and pancreas, we advise supplementary primary left perirenal-retroperitoneal drainage, considering how difficult it can be to loalize a secondary postoperative pancreatic abscess, especially when a computer-assisted tomography (CAT) is unavailable. In those cases in which the transverse colon had suffered circulatory damage from the acute pancreatitis, good results have been obtained with temporary coecostomy.

[The open-field, non-stressed behavior of rats under the acute and chronic effect of imipramine and tranylcypromine, depending on the individual reaction type (emotional and non-emotional)].

The acute and prolonged effects of imipramine and tranylcypromine were studied on 30 emotive and 30 non-emotive mature male Wistar rats to determine whether the drugs affect the behavior of these two reaction types differently. We found that both drugs change the typical behavior of the rats in the open field, each in a different way. Acute doses of imipramine inhibit symptoms of anxiety as well as the exploratory behavior so that the rats appear totally disinterested in their environment. This finding seems to confirm the assumed central nervous suppressing effects of this drug as mentioned in the literature. Single doses of tranylcypromine have effects similar to those mentioned for imipramine; however, long-term use results in a "vitalisation" of behavior: symptoms of anxiety remain inhibited and exploratory behavior becomes dominant. Both drugs produced a certain "flattening" of behavior. Due to the effects of drugs used, the original behavioral differences without stress disappear. Prolonged use of tranylcypromine makes emotive rats totally non-emotive.

Recovery of the bursa of Fabricius in chickens after cyclophosphamide treatment: a histological study.

Chickens were injected posthatching with cyclophosphamide in three different doses (total 8, 10, 11 mg). Histomorphological analysis of bursal tissue was performed up to 11 weeks of age. A probable biphasic recovery was observed in the majority of the chickens. The first phase of recovery is characterized by the appearance of solitary thioninophilic cells in reticuloepithelial follicles, followed in a few follicles by a redevelopment similar to embryonal follicular genesis. The late phase of recovery starts from week 7 on by infiltration of reticuloepithelial follicles with mature plasma cells in the manner of a peripheral lymphoid organ followed by thioninophilic lymphoid cells. The latter cells populate the follicles successively. Different transitions to normal follicles then take place. These investigations confirm observations of a reconstitution of bursal compartments starting some weeks later than the recovery of thymus, which takes place 2 weeks after cyclophosphamide treatment.

Influence of potassium and calcium ions on the phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylcholine metabolism in rat fibroblasts after growth stimulation by calf serum.

In secondary cultures of embryonic rat fibroblasts which were arrested in G1 (G0) by serum depletion and subsequently triggered into the cell cycle by readdition of growth factors isolated from fetal calf serum the influence of the potassium and calcium concentrations in the medium on phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylcholine metabolism was investigated. The incorporation of inorganic [32P]phosphate into phosphatidylinositol is dependent on the potassium content of the culture medium. The specific activity of 32P in phosphatidylinositol is increased at K+ concentrations between 0.1 and 1 mM. Also calcium (between 0.01 and 2 mM) slightly stimulates phosphatidylinositol metabolism. Also the incorporation of myo-[3H]inositol is increased at potassium concentrations between 0.2 and 1 mM, whereas calcium is slightly inhibitory. The labelling of phosphatidylcholine with either [32P]phosphate or [3H]choline is not dependent on the potassium and calcium concentrations of the culture medium. Moreover, the phospholipid metabolism of permanently growing epithelioid and fibroblastoid cells lines, which were investigated, is considerably less dependent on the K+ and Ca2+ ions.

[Pathogenesis of neural lesions in Marek's disease. I. Allergic skin reaction against myelin of the peripheral nerves (author's transl)].

23 chickens affected with Marek's disease were tested by the allergic skin reaction for delayed hypersensitivity against myelin and myelin preparations of peripheral nerves. 19 animals proofed to be positive in the skin test, yet there was no correlation with the intensity of the nerve affections. 4 animals with severe mononuclear neural infiltrations didn't show any allergic skin reaction. It could be demonstrated that in Marek's disease lymphocytes are sensitized against components of the peripheral myelin. Thereafter, Marek's disease stands in analogy to the Guillain-Barré syndrome of man, as well as to experimental allergic neuritis.
