Bovine respiratory syncytial virus in Quebec: antibody prevalence and disease outbreak.

The prevalence of antibody to bovine respiratory syncytial virus in Quebec and the role of the virus in a respiratory disease outbreak was investigated. The indirect immunofluorescent, neutralization and haemagglutination inhibition techniques were used to carry out this study. Of the 1,444 adult animals examined 519 (35.9%) had antibody to bovine respiratory syncytial virus. These positive reactors were found in each agricultural region of Quebec. The highest (53.0%) and the lowest (21.8%) prevalence was observed in the sera collected by the laboratories of St. Hyacinthe and Sherbrooke. During a respiratory disease outbreak affecting 77 calves on a farm, bovine respiratory syncytial virus was shown to be associated with infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, bovine parainfluenza type 3, bovine viral diarrhea viruses and bovine adenovirus type 3 as detected by seroconversion. Of the 38 seroconverted animals 14 were seropositive to bovine respiratory syncytial virus.

Differential serum protein changes following supplemental albumin resuscitation for hypovolemic shock.

The effects of supplemental albumin infusion on serum protein homeostasis were studied in 94 seriously injured patients who received an average of 14.4 transfusion, 9.2 L electrolyte solution, and 829 ml fresh frozen plasma before and during operation. Based on randomization, 46 patients received an average of 31 gm albumin during operation followed by 150 gm/day for 5 days; 48 patients received no albumin. Supplemental albumin caused a significant (p = less than 0.05) increase in total serum protein and albumin concentrations. In contrast, supplemental albumin caused a significant decrease in alpha 1 globulin, alpha 2 globulin, beta globulin, gamma globulin, and fibrinogen levels. The prothrombin time used as index of prothrombin concentration was significantly prolonged in albumin patients. These changes, not previously documented, need further evaluation to determine clinical significance.

Serological studies on leptospirosis in domestic animals in Quebec.

During a period of 30 months, from January 1977 to June 1979, Leptospira agglutinins were detected in 355 (6%) of 5841 bovine sera, 52 (10.1%) of 511 porcine sera, one (5%) of 20 equine sera and one (12.5%) of eight canine sera. Bovine, porcine and equine sera reacted predominantly with L. pomona. Reactors to L. hardjo/sejroe, L. icterohaemorrhagiae and L. grippotyphosa were also detected in cattle. One porcine serum reacted with L. grippotyphosa and one canine serum with L. icterohaemorrhagiae. Al the sera originated from suspected cases of leptospirosis.

Pathogenesis of experimental Leptospira interrogans serotype icterohaemorrhagiae infection in the guinea pigs: possible role of endotoxin of intestinal bacteria in the development of lesions.

Germ-free guinea pigs were infected with a virulent strain of Leptospira interrogans serotype icterohaemorrhagiae to evaluate the possible role of endotoxin of intestinal bacteria in the development of hemorrhages and hepatic and renal failure. Clinical manifestations, necropsy findings and histological lesions were similar to those seen in control animals. In the second part of the experiment, endotoxin was not detected by the Limulus test in the blood of ten guinea pigs during the five day course of leptospirosis.

Serological survey of leptospiral antibodies in swine in Quebec.

The prevalence of reactors to different serovars of Leptospira interrogans was determined in 117 swine premises in Quebec. A total of 926 sera were tested, using the microscopic agglutination method, against six leptospiral serovars: pomona, icterohaemorrhagiae, grippotyphosa, hardjo, canicola and ballum. Of the sera tested, 30 (3.2%) reacted to one of the three following serovars: pomona (2%), icterohaemorrhagiae (1.1%) and ballum (0.1%).

A serological survey for Brucella canis in dogs in the Province of Quebec.

A serological survey for canine brucellosis has been conducted on 341 dogs from different regions of the province of Quebec. A significant titer was found in six sera (1.6%) with the 2-mercaptoethanol tube agglutination test. Only two dogs presented titers >/= 1:200 which is considered as indicative of active infection.

[Dermatophilus congolensis infection in a dairy cow in Quebec (author's transl)].

Dermatophilus congolensis infection in a dairy cow in QuebecA case of infection by Dermatophilus congonlensis is described for the first time in the Province of Quebec, in a dairy cow. Dermatophilosis was diagnosed in the area of Saint-Hyacinthe in October 1978. It was not possible to find the source of the infection. The isolation of the microorganism was successful and the three techniques used are described. The death of the animal was attributed to complications following invasion by a secondary pathogen. All the other animals in the herd were free from clinical signs of infection. Moreover, no other case of infection by D. congolensis was found in other animal species or humans in the area.

Pulmonary effects of albumin resuscitation for severe hypovolemic shock.

The effect of albumin when added to the resuscitation regimen of patients in hypovolemic shock was studied in a randomized prospective manner in 52 injured patients who received an average of 15.3 transfusions, 9.6 liters of balanced electrolyte solution, and 980 ml of fresh frozen plasma. Before and during operation, 27 patients received an average of 25 gm of albumin and 150 gm/day for three to five days. Patients who received albumin had greater dependence on respiratory support, averaging eight days while receiving ventilatory support with volume ventilator compared with three days in patients not receiving albumin. Furthermore, patients receiving albumin had forced inspiratory oxygen/Pao2 ratios that were statistically and significantly higher than those of patients not receiving albumin during all phases of their hospital course. These effects were associated with increased plasma volumes caused by the oncotic effects of albumin and by its interference with saline diuresis. On the basis of this preliminary report, albumin seems to have a detrimental effect on respiratory function.

Measurement of skin temperatures of active subjects by wireless telemetry.

A new sensor has been developed for measurement of skin temperatures of active human subjects that consists of a radio transmitter circuit incorporating a skin thermistor in a small epoxy slab or "tab." These tabs are reuseable, being large enough to permit battery replacement if required. They are glued to a subject's skin (thermistor side facing the skin) with a quick-setting adhesive and are easily removed after a 10-h period with an appropriate solvent. Thermal information is easily obtained from the sensor by a hand-held calibrated radio receiver accurate to +/- 0.1 degree C. This technique permits easy and rapid documentation of the thermal stress of active human subjects without interfering with their activity or clothing.
