Differences between regular dropouts and disciplinary discharges from drug treatment programs have frequently been overlooked in studies on attrition. Data on symptom, mood, attitudes, and social dysfunction were collected from 104 males under treatment for drug abuse at a VA Hospital A 2 x 2 analysis of variance tested for differences between regular dropouts/disciplinary discharges and heroin/nonheroin subjects. Results showed that the heroin dropouts had the most negative attitude toward the Hard Drug User, and the heroin disciplinary discharges tended to be the most dysfunctional.

An Inuit boy was born with microphthalmia and a central corneal opacity of the right globe. Histopathologic examination revealed a central adherent corneal leukoma (Peter's anomaly) as well as absence of the lens. We are not aware of other well documented histopathologic reports of congenital aphakia and Peter's anomaly occurring in the same eye.

HLA A, B, and DR antigens were determined in a homogeneous group of patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy. The frequency of HLA-DRW3 was significantly higher in the patients than in a control population. The frequencies of HLA B8 and B18, which are in linkage disequilibrium with DRW3, were also increased.

As a means of assessing the value of fetal serum-creatine-kinase (S.C.K.) levels in the antenatal diagnosis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (D.M.D.), fetal muscle from control and at-risk fetuses was studied histologically and the findings were related to fetal S.C.K. levels. Of 7 at-risk fetuses 4 were believed to have normal muscle and all these had normal S.C.K. levels. However, of 3 fetuses with abnormal muscle only 1 had a raised S.C.K. level. At present caution should be exercised in offering antenatal diagnosis in D.M.D. on the basis of fetal S.C.K. levels.
A comparison has been made between assays of Fc receptor bearing cells among blood leucocytes from normal individuals and from patients with myeloid leukaemia, using human anti-D coated erythrocytes (HEA) and sheep erythrocytes sensitised with a rabbit anti-sheep erythrocyte antibody (SEA). Differences were found between the assays in both groups, demonstrating the heterogeneity of Fc receptors with respect to affinity for marker, and for Fc bearing leucocytes. Monocytoid cells reacted more readily with both markers than myeloid cells. The HEA rosette assay may be useful selective diagnostic aid for Fc+ myeloid leukaemia since the SEA assay detects Fc receptors on mature granulocytes.

Psychosocial and health data were obtained from 50 black and 47 white females age 65 and over. The women were divided according to whether they lived alone, with spouse only, or with persons other than (or in addition to) the spouse. Those living alone were found to have lower life satisfaction, lower self-esteem, and higher social dysfunction than those living with spouse or others. No differences were found with respect to depression, somatization, diet, or activity level. There was a significant interaction effect between race and living arrangement with respect to anxiety, with blacks being less anxious than whites when living with others, and more anxious when living alone or with only a spouse.
The physician plays a central role in the emotional as well as the physical care of the dying patient. The concerns of the terminally ill cancer patient include (1) emotional response to the physical limitations of illness, (2) communication with significant others, (3) self-concept, and (4) resolution regarding impending death. Although a busy physician would not be able to spend much time talking with the patient about these concerns, the physician could communicate to the patient in just a few minutes an empathic understanding of the emotional crises the patient faces. Sometimes only a word or touch of the hand can covey the physician's support and understanding which are so meaningful for a terminally ill patient.

A longitudinal study of body image change during pregnancy was conducted to test what aspects of body perception are sensitive to psychological change. Fifty-five black and 30 white women who were primiparous, less than 4 months pregnant and at least 17 years old, were interviewed during their first and third trimester as well as 6 weeks post partum. Awareness of one's stomach as measured by the Stomach Focus score of the Body Focus Questionnaire was sensitive to body changes which accompany pregnancy. However, the black women did not change in awareness of their stomachs following delivery as the white women did. The Body Distortion Questionnaire revealed that the black women felt most distorted at 9 months of pregnancy but the white women declined in body distortion. Both groups reported less distortion following parturition. Thus, cultural as well as psychological and physiological factors influence the way in which the body is perceived and experienced during pregnancy.
