The emotional as well as the physical impact of gynecologic cancer may be particularly felt in the area of sexual attitudes and behavior. Women newly diagnosed with gynecologic cancer were interviewed regarding their sexual behavior prior to diagnosis and treatment and how their activities changed after diagnosis. A significant decrease in sexual activity and satisfaction was reported. These findings can be used as a guideline for counseling the women with gynecologic cancer in conjunction with her partner.

We have studied the pattern of regeneration of peripheral blood cells following ABO compatible bone marrow transplantation for severe aplastic anaemia. 18 patients were treated with cyclosporin A and six with methotrexate for post graft immunosuppression. The number of days taken for the neutrophil count to reach 0.5 x 10(9)/l, the lymphocyte count to reach 1.0 x 10(9)/l, the platelet count to reach 100 x 10(9)/l and the reticulocytes to reach 1% was shorter in the CyA treated patients. This finding reached statistical significance for all types of cells except the platelets (neutrophils, P less than 0.001; lymphocytes, P less than 0.02; platelets, P greater than 0.05; reticulocytes, P less than 0.001). The more rapid regeneration of peripheral blood cells in patients treated with cyclosporin A has contributed to reducing the length of time patients are dependent on blood product support in the post transplant period.
Four multiplex families affected with adult polycystic kidney disease were investigated for segregation of the disease with haplotypes bearing HLA-A and B antigens and Bf allotypes. In no case did the disease travel with specific haplotypes within families showing an absence of linkage between the disease and the major histocompatability system. In addition, the disease was not associated with any HLA-A or B antigen or Bf allotype either within or among the families studied.
Cell-free HLA A and B antigens, paternal and maternal, have been detected in human amniotic fluids obtained from women at 16-18 weeks' gestation. Fractionation of amniotic fluid samples on sephadex showed that HLA A and B antigen activity was mainly in the 40,000 to 70,000 mol. wt. fractions. Lentil lectin sepharose 4B affinity chromatography of 30,000 to 70,000 sephadex molecular weight fraction of amniotic fluids isolated proteins which gave 2 bands, M and N, on discontinuous polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (disc PAGE without SDS). SDS disc PAGE of the LcH bound glycoproteins recovered from amniotic fluids indicated 4 main protein bands approximately 12,900, 32,000, 52,600 and 78,500 mol. wt. Schiff's stain of the SDS gels showed that all the proteins except the 12,900 mol. wt. polypeptide contained carbohydrate. It was suggested that the 12,900 and 32,000 mol. wt. proteins obtained on disc PAGE gels represented the 2 subunits of the HLA A and B antigen molecule, i.e., beta 2-microglobulin and the allospecific heavy chains, similar to the papain-solubilized moiety of membrane antigens. In the absence of SDS the 2 polypeptides migrate in polyacrylamide gels as 1 protein band M, representing the intact (undissociated) antigen molecules. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assays were proposed for the estimation of cell-free HLA antigens.

After retrospective evaluation with stored samples, the qualitative acetylcholinesterase (AChE) test has been used prospectively in conjunction with alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) assay on 986 amniotic fluid specimens received in this laboratory during 1980. The main value of AChE is in classifying fluids in which the AFP level is near the threshold between normal and abnormal. Among abnormal pregnancies with raised AFP levels, neural-tube defects can generally be distinguished from other abnormalities by careful appraisal of the AChE gel pattern, but confirmation of these other fetal abnormalities may require high resolution diagnostic ultrasonography and perhaps fetoscopy. Neural-tube defects with false negative AFP levels can be detected by AChE, but AChE gives occasional false positives so that it cannot be relied on in isolation for the diagnosis of neural-tube defects.

Human metaphase chromosomes, prepared for light microscopy were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Use of an osmium impregnation technique eliminated the need for sputter-coating and allowed high-resolution visualization of uncoated specimens. Chromosomes were of three-dimensional cylindrical profile, with well-defined chromatids and centromeres. Prior to Giemsa-banding a smooth surface morphology was observed. Relaxation of chromosome integrity by Giemsa-banding pretreatment allowed resolution of several orders of chromosome structure not previously demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy. The observed organization of the chromatin fibres allowed parallels to be drawn with the radial loop model of chromosome construction as described by Marsden and Laemmli.

Liver function abnormalities have occasionally been associated with imipramine since the drug was introduced in 1957. The mechanism by which the drug produces hepatotoxicity has not been determined but may involve a direct toxic effect or a hypersensitivity reaction. In this case, a patient receiving 6 mg/kg (300 mg) of imipramine daily developed elevated liver enzymes while the plasma imipramine concentration was found to be in a therapeutic range. This case suggests that single daily dosing of tricyclic antidepressants may be more hazardous to the liver than divided doses.

Eleven adult asthmatics were given fenoterol either as a metered aerosol dose or as an inhaled powder with appropriate controls, in a randomised double-blind fashion. The increase in FEV1 was the same after both dosage forms and no side effects occurred indicating that powder inhalation is a safe and effective alternative to aerosol inhalation in the treatment of asthma with sympathomimetics.
