Comparison of four culture media for isolation of Mycobacterium avium complex from porcine tissues.

The efficiency of four culture media was compared for the isolation of Mycobacterium avium complex from 197 procine tissues. In 82 tissues with microscopic granulomas and acid-fast bacilli, a significantly greater number of isolates were obtained on Middlebrook 7H10 medium with sodium pyruvate than on Stonebrink medium, Herrold egg yolk agar medium, or Lowenstein-Jensen medium (P=0.01). In 46 tissues in which no microscopic granulomas or acid-fast bacilli were observed, a significantly greater number of isolates were made on Middlebrook 7H10 medium or Herrold egg yolk agar medium than on Stonebrink medium or on Lowenstein-Jensen medium (P=0.01). The time required to grow M. avium complex on Lowenstein-Jensen medium was significantly greater than the time required to observe growth on Stonebrink, Middlebrook 7H10, or Herrold egg yolk agar medium (p=0.001).

Use of an enzyme immunoassay test for characterizing the A and M antigens of Brucella.

An enzyme immunoassay test was developed for detecting the A and M antigens of brucellae. One hundred fifteen isolates, including 96 strains of Brucella abortus, 5 strains of B. suis, 1 strain of B. melitensis and 1 strain of B. neotomae, were accurately serotyped with the enzyme immunoassay test. No reactions were observed with 11 isolates of B. canis and 1 isolate of B. ovis. This rapid serological test provides for considerable savings in time and materials as compared with the standard tube agglutination test.

Bovine tuberculosis in the United States and Puerto Rico: a laboratory summary.

Mycobacteria were isolated from 14.3% of the tissues submitted to the National Veterinary Services Laboratories over a 5-year period (July 1, 1972, to June 30, 1977). The isolates were identified by drug susceptibility, and biochemical and serologic tests. Mycobacterium bovis isolated from tissues of cattle originating in 32 states and Puerto Rico accounted for 78% of the acid-fast isolations. Of the Mycobacterium bovis isolates, 4% were from tissues in which no microscopic tuberculous granulomas were observed on examination of tissue sections. Of the 119 Mycobacterium avium isolates, 18 were serotype 1, 44 were serotype 2, and 45 isolates represented 12 other serotypes.

Survey of leptospiral agglutinins in the sera of swine of southeastern Alabama.

The occurrence of leptospirosis in swine of southeastern Alabama was determined. A total of 627 sera were tested, using the microscopic agglutination method, with live antigens of 12 serovars. Of the sera tested, 121 (19.3%) had a titer of 1:100 or greater to the serovars employed. The percentage distribution of sera with titers of greater than or equal to 1:100 among serovars most commonly reported was as follows: Leptospira interrogans serovars pomona, 3.8%; icterohaemorrhagiae, 3.3%; canicola, 1.6%; hardjo, 0.7%; and grippotyphosa, 0.16%. Of the less commonly recognized leptospiral serovars, the percentages reacting were as follows: ballum, 4.9%; autumnalis, 3.2%; pyrogenes, 1.1%; and bataviae, 0.4%. None of the sera reacted with antigen of serovars australis, tarassovi, or wolffi.

Tonsillar hypertrophy and chronic hypoxia.

Three patients with hypertrophied tonsils presented in the Mater Children's Hospital with chronic hypoxia and congestive cardiac failure. The clinical features and physiological basis of this unusual syndrome are discussed. The condition is potentially fatal, but may be completely cured by adenotonsillectomy.

Isolation of previously unreported serotypes of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae from swine.

Serologic, biochemical, and pathogenic characteristics of 11 porcine isolants of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae that could not be placed in any of 16 established serotypes, were examined. On the basis of double-diffusion percipitin reactions, isolants were divided into 4 serologic variants, given serotype designations 17, 18, 19, and 20. Biochemical activity of the isolants was typical of E rhusiopathiae. One or more isolants of each serologic variant were pathogenic for both mice and swine.

An intensive support unit for parent-infant distress.

Integration of the young infant with his parent(s), in the days and weeks after birth, should be as stress free as possible. In many families considerable distress is experienced in the parent-infant relationship. There is increasing evidence that distress of significant degree may have complex sequelae, particularly for the infant, and may affect growth and development in many areas. Child abuse is another expression of this distress. A unit aimed at providing intensive support for such distressed situations is described and evaluated on a short-term basis. The evaluation suggests that this unit is successful in alleviating many of the outcomes of such situations.

Communication for the aphasic stroke patient: assessment and therapy.

Loss of communicative ability is one of the most devastating handicaps associated with stroke. The goals of therapy require continuous adjustment. Early ambulation facilitates breathing, chewing and swallowing, which are important factors in voice control. Hearing and vision should also receive concentrated attention. Formal speech therapy should begin when the patient shows an interest in regaining speech. Even before that, however, family members and friends can be of great help in laying the foundation for a good prognosis.

Salmonella and Erysipelothrix infection in swine: a laboratory summary.

The occurrence of salmonellas and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae in tissues of swine was determined by bacteriologic and fluorscent antibody examination of 5,297 specimens from herds investigated for hog cholera. Of the specimens examined, 35.5% were positive for salmonellas, 21.1% were positive for E rhusiopathiae, and 8.3% were positive for both salmonellas and E rhusiopathiae.
