The media as an approach to adolescent health education.

A series of eight 60-second dialogues was cooperatively produced by the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department's Adolescent Clinic and KTAC Radio, Tacoma, Washington. The format was one in which the radio announcer made a statement concerning adolescent health, followed by an adolescent's asking a specific health question, a response being made by a health professional, and the announcer's concluding by giving a local resource and phone number. Included in this series were questions about weight reduction, scoliosis, headaches, hypertension, sexually transmitted diseases, temper and anger, stress, and fatigue. The dialogues were aired ten times a day at times appropriate for the adolescent listener. In addition to acquainting the adolescent with clinic and community services, this series gave answers to many developmental questions that may influence the adolescent's behavior and self-concept.

The effectiveness of pediatric nurse associates as clinical instructors of medical students.

Pediatric nurse associates (PNAs) have provided health care services for children, taught physical diagnosis to first-year medical students, and acted as role models for students and residents. Their role as clinical instructors has not been measured objectively. This study evaluated the effect of PNA interaction with medical students in a pediatric clerkship. Students taught by PNAs had higher gains in factual knowledge and greater skills in physical examination as measured by a videotape of a patient encounter. The PNAs demonstrated that they can be effective instructors of medical students.

Antisporozoite antibodies in mice immunized with irradiation-attenuated Plasmodium berghei sporozoites.

Sera from NMRI/NIH mice were tested for the presence of IgM and IgG anti-sporozoite antibodies using the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Both IgM and IgG antibody titres were related to the number of immunizations with irradition-attenuated Plasmodium berghei sporozoites, and protection from challenge with subsequent non-attenuated sporozoites correlated with the pre-challenge antibody titre. Sera taken five days following challenge showed marked reductions in antibody titres, except for the group receiving the maximum (four) immunizations. Groups immunized with frozen sporozoites or mosquito tissue antigen developed neither antibodies to sporozoites nor protective immunity; nor did animals infected with parasitized blood. However, sera from mice immunized four times with attenuated sporozoites demonstrated IFA titres to blood-stage antigens. The results show that both IgM and IgG antisporozoite antibodies could be detected in mice immunized with attenuated-sporozoites by IFAT, and that the antibody titres correlated with protective immunity. Cross reaction with blood-stage antigens occurred, but the test should still prove useful.

Interaction of thoracic irradiation and chemotherapy on local control and survival in small cell carcinoma of the lung.

The records of all patients with small cell carcinoma of the lung seen in the Division of Therapeutic Radiology at The Medical College of Wisconsin from 1971 through 1977 were reviewed. Of 69 patients (34 with limited disease and 35 with extensive disease), 35 received irradiation only, nine received local plus total-body irradiation, and 25 received irradiation plus chemotherapy. In spite of the prompt response of the tumor, 16 of 35 patients who were only irradiated failed locally. Two patients who received local plus total-body irradiation failed in the chest. Only four of 25 irradiation plus chemotherapy patients failed locally in spite of much lower doses of thoracic irradiation. Limited-disease patients who had local control by irradiation had a slight increase (29 vs 22 weeks) in median survival. Patients receiving irradiation plus chemotherapy (three with limited and 22 with extensive disease) survived for a median of 56 weeks if the local tumor was controlled and for a median of 28 weeks if there was local failure. Regardless of therapy, survival beyond the median is greatly influenced by local tumor control.

Kwashiorkor not associated with poverty.

Four infants are described with kwashiorkor that was unassociated with poverty or infection as predisposing factors of their disease. The condition followed various dietary regimens deficient in protein of five weeks to seven months in duration. Features of this "sugar-bady" form of kwashiorkor included a low level of physician awareness of malnutrition as a diagnostic consideration, growth retardation, edema, muscle wasting, mental changes, and mild lymphocytosis. Initially, recovery was associated with rapid loss of weight and anemia and subsequently with weight gain and return to good health.

Dihydroretinoic acids and their derivatives. Synthesis and biological activity.

The syntheses of the ring and four side-chain dihydroretinoic acids and/or their esters, 3-7, are described. The syntheses of several other retinoids containing a substituted aromatic ring are also included. The biological activity of the compounds was evaluated in vivo in a chemically induced mouse skin papilloma test and in vitro in two vitamin A deficient assays. The activity observed for 1a, 1c, and 2a in the former test was partially retained in the dihydro derivatives 4b, 4c, and 6b. Similar results were found in the in vitro assays.

Inhibition of growth and regression of a transplantable rat chondrosarcoma by three retinoids.

An aromatic analog of retinoic acid, all-trans-9-(4-methoxy-2,3,6-trimethylphenyl)-3,7-dimethyl-2,4,6,8-nonatetraenoic acid (Ro 10-1670), its ethyl esther (Ro 10-9359), and ethyl amide (Ro 11-1430) have been shown to inhibit the growth of a transplantable rat chondrosarcoma. The inhibition observed occurred over a range of tolerated doses. At the higher tolerated dose levels, significant regressions of already established tumors were observed. All three compounds were active when administered ip for 2 or 4 weeks. The ethyl ester, Ro 10-9359, and the etyl amide, Ro 11-1430, were also active when administered for 4 weeks as dietary admixes. In the latter experiments, both compounds were equally effective at tolerated doses, but Ro 11-1430 was less toxic than Ro 10-9359 at higher doses.
