Cadmium in kidney cortex of inhabitants of North-West Germany: its relationship to age, sex, smoking and environmental pollution by cadmium.

The cadmium concentration in kidney cortex (CdKc) was determined in 388 deceased persons, who at the time of death had lived in the cities of Düsseldorf and Duisburg, Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), and surrounding areas. The average CdKc concentration was found to be 17.1 micrograms/g wet weight. Individual values range from less than 0.4 to 94.3 micrograms/g wet weight. The CdKc levels rapidly increase during the first decades of life. At the age of about 40 years, a plateau phase is reached. At high ages (greater than 70 years), the CdKc levels tend to decrease. Cigarette smokers have significantly higher CdKc concentrations than non-smokers. The increase of CdKc depends on the number of cigarettes smoked. Cigar and pipe smokers have slightly increased CdKc levels compared to non-smokers. Non-smokers who had spent the major part of their life in the area of Duisburg, a cadmium-polluted area, have, on the average, significantly higher CdKc levels than non-smokers from the less-polluted surrounding areas. In smokers the residential factor is masked by the effect of cigarette smoking.

Rapid massive irrigating fluid absorption during transurethral resection of the prostate.

Absorption of irrigating fluid is common during transurethral resection (TUR) of the prostate. Eleven patients were monitored peroperatively during TUR with measurements of bladder pressure, arterial blood pressure, central venous pressure and determinations of serum sodium as well as fluid balance. A rapid massive irrigating fluid absorption occurred in one case. The clinical course and data from the patient monitoring makes it possible to study early manifestations of irrigating fluid absorption. The bladder pressure recordings show that maximum intravesical pressures were not higher during the phase of rapid massive absorption as compared to periods without absorption.

[Incidence of chronic bronchitis in foundry workers].

A report about examinations of foundries' workers who live in the destrict Schwarzenberg is given. Hereby the prevalence of chronic bronchitis should be analyzed in comparison to nonexposed controls. In result 21.1% among foundries' workers and 10.2% among controls had symptoms of chronic bronchitis. The differences are significant. As expected it could be shown, that smoking habits and age are further factors for development of chronic bronchitis. Both the observance of occupational limit-values for dusts and other harmful materials at the work place, which have effects on the respiration system, and the medical survey of workers with the use of special methods for examination of respiratory system are necessary. In workers with findings of respiratory system the factory doctors and pulmonary physicians have to decide together the ability to work in the foundry.

Clinical evaluation of flurbiprofen alone and plus ampicillin in chronic pharyngitis in acute phase.

An open, controlled, completely randomized between-patients study was carried out on 41 patients with chronic pharyngitis in the acute phase. The study was divided in two parts. In the first one the effect of a single flurbiprofen rectal dose was studied in 10 patients: 5 treated with flurbiprofen (120 mg) and 5 with flurbiprofen (100 mg) plus oral ampicillin (500 mg). In the second part 31 patients were treated with flurbiprofen (200 mg/day) for 4 weeks; 18 out of 31 were also treated with ampicillin (1 g/day) for the first week. The mean age was approximately 53 years in the single dose study and 40 days in the long-term one. Flurbiprofen alone allowed an excellent control of pain and of signs of inflammations equivalent to the one obtained in combination with ampicillin but without exposing the patients to the risks of the undesired effects of antibiotics.

Environmental exposure to cadmium and renal function of elderly women living in cadmium-polluted areas of the Federal Republic of Germany.

An epidemiological study was performed to assess whether environmental pollution by cadmium as found in cadmium-polluted areas of the Federal Republic of Germany is associated with an increased prevalence of biological signs of kidney dysfunction in population groups non-occupationally exposed to heavy metals. The study was run in two industrial areas known to be highly contaminated by cadmium, lead and other heavy metals, viz. Stolberg and Duisburg. Düsseldorf was selected as a reference area. As a study population we selected 65- and 66-year-old women (n = 286) who had spent the major part of their lives in one of these areas. The average cadmium levels in blood (CdB) and urine (CdU) revealed significant differences in exposure to cadmium in the order Stolberg greater than Duisburg greater than Düsseldorf. Serum creatinine levels were, on average, significantly higher in the Stolberg group than in the Duisburg and Düsseldorf groups. However, with respect to the urinary excretion of low molecular weight proteins (beta 2-microglobulin, retinol-binding protein), albuminuria, total proteinuria, aminoaciduria, phosphaturia and some other biological findings, no significant differences between the study populations were noted. Similarly, the prevalence of clinically-confirmed hypertension as well as the relative frequency of hypertensive subjects (systolic greater than or equal to 160 and/or diastolic greater than or equal to 95 mm Hg) did not differ significantly among the three study groups. There was no exposure-response relationship between CdU and tubular proteinuria in the range of the CdU-levels found (0.1 to 5.2 micrograms/g creatinine). However, albuminuria tended to be increased at CdU levels greater than 2 micrograms/g creatinine.

Reaction time methods in the study of motor programming: the precuing of hand, digit, and duration.

Recent reaction time analysis of motor programming has utilized a precue stimulus that provides advance information about some or all of the attributes for the upcoming motor response. This kind of precue typically confounds the number of remaining stimuli with the motoric processes under investigation (Zelaznik, 1978). In Experiments 1 and 2 the precuing of hand, digit, and duration of a key press response was manipulated. A new precuing procedure was utilized that does not confound the number of stimuli with the motoric processes under investigation. The findings of Experiments 1 and 2 demonstrate that none of the advance information was helpful in reducing reaction time and as such, suggest that these features of movement are not selected in any particular order. Experiment 3 compared this new method of precuing to the other, traditional method. The results of this experiment suggested that there is parallel processing of the perceptual and motor mental operations in this reaction-time task, since there was an underadditive interaction between the number of stimulus response alternatives and the non-precued movement dimensions. This paper highlights problems inherent in the utilization of precursing methods to understand motor programming processes. It appears that a better understanding about the variables involved in movement control is necessary before examining the order of selection of those variables.

Neuroendocrine investigation of depression in mentally retarded patients. A pilot study.

As part of a pilot study, eight adults with severe mental retardation were screened for the presence of endogenous depression by the standard 1-mg overnight dexamethasone suppression test (DST). The eight had been rigorously screened to rule out potential for false-positive DST. Two of the eight patients demonstrated nonsuppression, and a third had borderline results. Of these three, two manifested behavioral disturbances that could be attributed to major depressive disorder. The authors discuss the results, the difficulty diagnosing psychiatric disorders in severely retarded persons, and the proposed utility of the DST in this area.

Restriction endonucleases can be used to study B-Z junctions in supercoiled DNA.

Plasmids containing (C-G)n inserts have been used to study the inhibition of cleavage by restriction endonucleases due to Z-DNA formation in negatively supercoiled plasmids. The enzyme BssHII, which recognizes G-C-G-C-G-C, is strongly inhibited when the insert forms Z-DNA. The BamHI recognition sequence (G-G-A-T-C-C) was placed in four different positions near the B-Z junction and the inhibition of BamHI cleavage was determined as a function of negative superhelical density. Formation of Z-DNA in the (C-G)n insert inhibited cleavage by BamHI when its recognition sequence was located immediately adjacent to the insert or four base pairs away from it. However, no inhibition was found when the BamHI recognition site was eight base pairs away. These experiments help to define the limits of the structural perturbation associated with the B-Z junction.
