Hazards to children in traffic. A paediatrician looks at road accidents.

An overall view is presented of the hazards to children in traffic. The importance of the developmental aspects of childhood accidents is stressed, and a plea is made for doctors working with children to recognise the part they could play in reducing the number of road accidents to children by their understanding of child development and behaviour. It is an aspect of preventive paediatrics that is largely neglected at present.

Child-resistant packaging and accidental child poisoning.

From Jan. 1, 1976, all children's aspirin and paracetamol preparations were required to be presented either in child-resistant containers or in dark-tinted unit packaging. In two areas hospital admissions of children under 5 years for accidental ingestion of aspirin were monitored from 1974 to 1976 to assess the effectiveness of this measure. There was a highly significant fall in admissions for accidental salicylate poisoning (129 in 1975 to 48 in 1976, P less than 0-001). Admissions fell throughout 1976 as old stocks were used up. Further analysis of cases in one area suggests that the fall in admissions from accidental salicylate poisoning was due to the packaging of one preparation of junior aspirin in child-resistant containers.

Paediatric home nursing scheme in Gateshead.

A scheme to provide specialised nursing care for sick children in their own homes was begun in Gateshead in 1974. Selected district nurses were retrained in the paediatric unit on which the scheme was based and nursed at home 22 children referred to them by general practitioners as the alternative to hospital admission and 39 discharged to their care by the hospital. Most of the children were aged 3 years or less and came from working-class homes. Most of the mothers who were asked were in favour of the scheme.

Why don't we prevent childhood accidents?

Accidental injury is the most important epidemic in the Western world today, and is especially important as a cause of death and disability in childhood. Many environmental factors are important causes of accidents, but there is no organisation within which doctors, official bodies, industry, and voluntary bodies can pool their experience and co-ordinate their efforts to reduce these environmental risks. A joint committee on childhood accident prevention should be formed in this country similar to that which exists in Sweden.

Ru-Tuss in the symptomatic treatment of allergic rhinitis.

In the treatment of allergic rhinitis with a placebo only one symptom, nasal itching, was reduced significantly. Where Ru-Tuss tablets were used, all symptoms improved and statistically significant reduction of symptoms were obtained for lacrimation, nasal itching, sneezing, itching of the mouth, itching of the pharynx, rhinorrhea and the condition of the nasal mucosa. Ridit analysis was used to evaluate differences between the Ru-Tuss Tablet and the placebo treated groups.
