Lupinus albus and Lupinus mutabilis may achieve importance among the andean countries in which soy bean can not grow due to ecological reasons. Both lupin varieties are outstanding because of their high protein and oil content. Its alkaloid content limits the lupins usage; however the bitter substances can be eliminated by means of genetic selection or technological processing. Beside the intoxication caused by alkaloids exists the lupinosis, which is caused by a micotoxin. This disease can be observed when animals pasture forages which suffered under a secundary attack of fungus. According to the results obtained up to date other antimetabolic substances present in the legums have no significant importance. The lupin seed flour is adequate for animal consumption, being used for this effect in different countries. Starting next year there exist the prospects of employing Lupinus mutabilis as an oil source in Peru and Lupinus albus as proteic flour in Chile.
An isothermal flowmeter with improved frequency response for measuring tissue blood flow was developed using thermistors. Direct heating of the thermistors allows a simple construction of small (0.5 mm outer diameter) capillary probes which do not require any additional heating coil. The changes of a feedback current necessary to keep the thermistor at a constant increment above tissue temperature indicate tissue blood flow; a second thermistor compensates variations of tissue temperature. The dynamic performance of the device shows a low-pass characteristic with a cut-off frequency higher than 5 Hz. For low flow rates the output signal was found to be proportional to the flow; for higher flow rates a linearization was necessary. Since tissue temperature can be recorded continuously, intermittent quantitative in-vivo calibration seems possibly by evaluation of "heater off" curves in the perfused and non-perfused tissue. As the flowmeter is insensitive to tissue temperature, it can be used for long-term recordings.

Under certain conditions, continuous availability of 3H-thymidine in steady-state cell systems results in a linear increase of the fraction of labelled cells, the equation of which can be used to determine cell cycle parameters of the system investigated.

Washed human platelets have been labeled with either 32Pi or glycerol-1-14C and the distribution of the label in the phospholipids determined. 32Pi was introduced primarily into polyphosphoinositides, i.e. di- and triphosphoinositide, whereas the label from glycerol which indicates de novo synthesis of lipid molecules did not appear in these phospholipids. In the course of thrombin-induced aggregation and release the phosphate incorporation into phosphatic acid, di- and triphosphoinositide was rapidly stimulated in parallel to the platelet reaction. The incorporation of glycerol did not change under the same conditions. It is concluded that phosphoinositides with rapid incorporation of phosphate groups are not as rapidly synthesized de novo and presumably form a separate phospholipid pool in the platelets. Only the phosphorylating reactions are stimulated by the thrombin aggregation. The necessary enzymes for these reactions, namely diglyceride kinase, phosphatidylinositol kinase, and phosphatidylinositol-phosphate kinase all can be shown to be associated with a well characterized platelet membrane fraction.

Lupinus albus flour doses of 58.9 +/- 9.6 g have been given to 20 persons. This sweet lupine flour has been digestible without complications in all cases. There have been no significant changes of hemoglobine, hematocrite, total protein, urea, bilirubine, and SGOT in the blood. So the lupine may be used for improvement of protein supply in men under the criteria that (1) the alkaloid content of the seed does not exceed 0.02%, (2) the seed itself contains no secondary fungi which may cause a lupinosis.
48 different dishes enriched with lupinus albus flour have been tested by 20 persons. The test duration has been 4 weeks. Meals and products with lupine admixtures have been judged equally with concern to corresponding conventional dishes. Farinaceous products had the best test results. Therefore, it is recommended for Peru to add lupine flour when producing bread, biscuits, sauces, soups, and noodles (maccaronis etc.). The test time had no influence to the test results.
Adipose tissue was removed from five-day old chickens after a) an overnight fast, b) total pancreatectomy and c) partial evisceration and digested with collagenase. The adipocytes were incubated with pancreatic glucagon (Novo) and the glycerol released into the medium taken as the index of lipolytic activity. A moderate fast, while being without effect on basal lipolysis, slightly decreased adipocyte sensitivity to glucagon. Pancreatectomy and evisceration significantly reduced both basal lipolysis and the response to glucagon: the impairment was most evident just at the concentration found in the plasma of such operated animals. It seems clear that normal lipolysis is under the control not only of pancreatic factors, but also of those of intestinal origin, and can only proceed normally when both are present.
The proliferating granulocyte precursor pool of rat bone marrow was labelled during DNA synthesis by continuous infusion and by single injection of 3H-thymidine (3H-TdR), as well as by single injection of 125I-iododeoxyuridine (125I-UdR). The appearance of neutrophilic granulocytes in the blood stream after these various labelling procedures was studied by autoradiography. Labelling patterns of blood neutrophils were identical during continuous infusion and after single injection of 3H-TdR, and 100% labelling of the blood compartment was achieved. This result indicated reutilization of DNA catabolites to occur in granulocytopoiesis leading to continuous availability of 3H-labelled DNA precursors even after a single injection of 3H-TdR. Attempts to suppress reutilization of label by infusion of cold thymidine 1 h after injection of 3H-TdR were unsuccessful. However, a change in the labelling pattern of blood neutrophils was seen after single injection of 125I-UdR, a DNA precursor poorly reutilized in comparison to 3H-TdR. This result provided further evidence for reutilization of DNA catabolites by the cell system investigated. A comprehensive discussion of the results indicates that thymidinemonophosphate is the biochemical level of reutilization in granulocytopoiesis.
In conscious dogs static pressure-flow relationships (I-P curves) were obtained both for the normal autoregulating kidney vasculature and under conditions of maximal vasodilation induced by infusion of papaverine or acetylcholine into the renal artery. Concentration-response curves for the substances infused showed the typical S-shape. Control I-P curves exhibited an autoregulatory plateau; under maximal vasodilation the I-P curves were pressure-passive up to a perfusion pressure of 50 mm Hg, following a power function (1 = a-Pn) with an exponent greater than 1. Under the influence of acetylcholine, renal blood flow was significantly higher than under control conditions even at a perfusion pressure of 20 mm Hg. This indicates that there is an appreciable vascular tone even at a low pressure. The I-P curves under acetylcholine showed a break at about 50 mm Hg, above which the I-P curves were straight lines.
