Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli in central Canada.

During epidemiological studies carried out in urban and rural areas of the midwestern Canadian province of Manitoba, we cultured enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) from 16 (1.7%) of 945 diarrheal stools and 4 (0.3%) of 1,282 normal stools. ETEC was found in not more than 2.3% of diarrheal stools obtained from any population during any season. Diarrhea associated with ETEC persisted for a mean of 9 days. Two children were dehydrated and required intravenous fluid therapy, and one adult suffered a cholera-like syndrome. Half of the children required hospitalization for management of their diarrhea. Two adults and two children who harbored ETEC were completely asymptomatic. The pattern of toxin production correlated with serotype and the serotypes encountered were (with a few exceptions) similar to those found in other areas. We conclude that ETEC is an uncommon cause of diarrhea, both in rural and urban areas of central Canada. However, the possibility that ETEC might cause severe sporadic cases or epidemics of gastroenteritis remains.

The separate and combined influences of common carotid occlusion and nonhypotensive hemorrhage on kidney blood flow.

The separate and combined effects of bilateral common carotid occlusion (C.C.O.) and hemorrhage on renal blood flow (R.B.F.) were studied in 11 unanesthetized dogs. C.C.O. increased arterial blood pressure (4.4 kPa; 33 mm Hg) and heart rate (10 beats/min) while R.B.F. remained unchanged. When kidney perfusion pressure was maintained at its resting level during C.C.O. (implanted pneumatic cuff) there was also no change in R.B.F. After cutting the aortic nerves in 2 dogs the increase in blood pressure and heart rate with C.C.O. was greater (10.6 kPa; 80 mm Hg and 72 beats/min); however, there was no change in R.B.F. A blood loss of 16% (13.6 ml/kg) reduced central venous pressure (0.3 kPa; 2 mm Hg), increased heart rate (8-14 beats/min) and decreased arterial mean pressure by a maximum of 0.7 kPa (5 mm Hg) (non-hypotensive hemorrhage, N.H.H.). R.B.F. showed a tendency to rise and 90 min after the onset of bleeding was slightly increased (12% of control). After N.H.H. carotid occlusion had no effect on R.B.F. when kidney perfusion pressure increased; when perfusion pressure was controlled during C.C.O. the maximum observed decrease of R.B.F. was 15 ml/min (5% of control). It is concluded that the control of R.B.F. during the baroreceptor reflex under normovolemia and after a blood loss of 16% in the conscious dog at rest does not involve sympathetic vasoconstrictor effects which result in a significant change in total blood flow.

Remission induction and remission maintenance in adult acute nonlymphocytic leukemia employing a modified cytostatic (COAP) regimen.

Thirty adult patients suffering from acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL) were treated according to a modified COAP regimen. Vincristine, cyclophosphamide, and prednisone were given by push injection, while cytosine arabinoside was infused over periods of 8 h. Nineteen patients (63%) achieved complete remission. Remission maintenance therapy consisted of 6-mercaptopurine daily and methotrexate twice weekly. Later in the study, COAP consolidation and reinduction was added, which improved the median duration of complete remission from 7 to 24 months. Comparison of the results with the literature shows that the modified COAP regimen is one of the most effective treatment schedules for adult ANLL.

Esophageal emptying in achalasia quantitated by a radioisotope technique.

Delayed esophageal emptying of a radiolabeled meal distinguished symptomatic achalasia patients from asymptomatic controls. Esophageal emptying of the isotope meal significantly improved in ten achalasia patients after pneumatic dilation, and in one patient after surgical myotomy. The emptying curve in some patients after treatment simulated that of control subjects. Quantitation of esophageal emptying by a radiolabeled meal is a physiologic test that may be useful in evaluating results of therapy for achalasia.

[Lupins - a new source of food for Andean countries. 5. Traditional methods of debittering of lupins by water].

The bitter taste of lupin alkaloids can be sensorially detected in water within ppm-range. The strength of the taste diminishes as follows: sparteine, D-Lupanin-perchlorate, lupinine, isolupinine and hydroxylupanine. The swelling capacity of lupin seeds presents different characteristics according to the species. The swelling rapidity is in L. albus somehow inferior to that of L. mutabilis. The absorption of water decreases in hot water, and the swelling rapidity increases. For domestic debittering it is recommended to cook whole lupin seeds during half an hour and to debitter them for 3 days in flowing water. The isoelectric point of the protein of L. mutabilis lies between pH 4 and 4.5.

A mathematical model of thrombopoiesis in rats.

A mathematical model of thrombopoiesis in rats is presented. This has four compartments; stem cells, megakaryocytes, thrombocytes and thrombopoietin. A high thrombopoietin concentration influences bone marrow proliferation in three ways. Firstly the stem cells are stimulated and a slow increase in megakaryocyte number follows. Secondly there are additional endomitoses in the (early) megakaryocytes resulting in an increase in megakaryocyte volume. Thirdly the megakaryocyte maturation time is shortened. The parameters of the model are determined from experimental values for the normal, maximum and minimum proliferation rates, maturation times and destruction rates. The model is tested by comparing simulated results for acute and chronic thrombocytopenia and thrombocytosis with experimental curves from the literature. The model and data agree within the limits of experimental error. Not all of the thrombopoietic regulatory system is known yet, so some important alternative hypotheses are investigated and compared with the model. Several hypotheses have been excluded in this way.

Cognitive correlates of sex-role identification.

This study examined sex role and its relationship to several cognitive variables. No relationship between these variables and sex role but a significant difference between males and females was found for only a perceptual-motor speed task. These findings may indicate that sex role is unrelated to cognitive style as measured here.

Hepatic triglyceride and lipoprotein lipase activities of post-heparin plasma in normals and hypertriglyceridemics.

Post-heparin plasma hepatic triglyceride lipase (H-TGL) and lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activities were 8-34 and 3.5-21 (range) mu mol/ml/hr respectively in males with normal serum lipid concentrations. In females the corresponding values were 4-25 and 4-16 mu mol/ml/hr. No significant differences were observed between ages or between the two sexes. Male patients with hypertriglyceridaemia had similar activities of H-TGL but significantly lower values for LPL activities than the control males. Significant linear correlations were found between serum triglyceride concentrations and LPL activities both for males (coefficient of correlation = r = -0.64) and for females (r = -0.62).
