Evaluating voluntary risks of injury.

Making sound safety decisions requires accurate estimates of the costs of injuries and the benefits of their reduction. These estimates may be produced intuitively by citizens exposed to risk of injury, or formally, for analysts considering alternative safety policies. All such estimates rely on behavioral assumptions, regarding how people perceive and respond to to risks. They also rely on ethical assumptions, regarding how people should respond. The nature and validity of these assumptions are analyzed here, in order to provide a consumer's guide to techniques designed to evaluate risks and devise safety policies.

A review of the high-level nuclear waste repository siting analysis.

We critique two 1986 Department of Energy reports concerning the selection of sites for characterization as the nation's first high-level nuclear waste repository. We find that the multiattribute utility analysis of the five nominated sites was well done, although we express concern about the assessed probabilities, question the construction of two important attribute scales, and disagree with some of the value tradeoffs that were used. In contrast, we find the logic of the recommendations report to be weak and unconvincing.

The interaction of nucleotides with F1-ATPase inactivated with 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzofurazan.

In common with the F1-ATPase from other sources, yeast mitochondrial F1-ATPase was inhibited by 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzofurazan. Total inhibition of the F1-ATPase activity was compatible with the modification of a single tyrosine residue per F1-ATPase molecule. Radioactive labelling experiments localized this modification on a beta-subunit. The inactive modified enzyme retained the capacity to bind the photoaffinity label 8-azido-1,N6-etheno-ATP, which has previously been shown to bind nucleotide sites of low affinity. As well, the inactive modified enzyme bound MgATP with high affinity, yielding a Kd of 14 microM. The results are consistent with the hypothesis of alternating, or cooperative, site catalysis by F1-ATPase.

Parallelising a model of bacterial interaction and evolution.

Large simulations of bacterial colonies require huge amounts of computational time, the only way to achieve the necessary level of performance is with parallel computers and a suitably designed implementation that maps the problem onto the hardware. For real problems this mapping can be a non-trivial problem requiring careful consideration of the constraints in both the system being modelled and the hardware that executes that model. Here we describe an implementation of a system for modelling bacterial evolution that encompasses many physical scales. This system is composed entirely of individual entities all playing out a complex series of interactions. These individuals exist at the scale of the population of bacterial and at the gene product scale. This paper reports that it is possible to map a dynamic problem such as this onto fixed resources, for the most part making use of implicit multiplexing of resources provided by the OS and partitioning the problem to reduce communication time. Through this an efficient simulation can be created, making maximal use of the available hardware without constraining the model to require excessively specific resources.
