We report here the clinico-pathological data about 4 patients with brainstem tumors. Clinical symptoms were variable but allowed a correct topical diagnosis. On the other hand, all the neuroradiological examinations, especially CT scan of the brain, resulted always negative or without diagnostic value. Good results for the diagnosis were given by pneumoencephalography and ventriculography. The neuropathological examination revealed one spongioblastoma, two malignant astrocytomas and one pontine metastasis of carcinoma of esophagus. Diagnostic troubles, even with modern and sophisticated techniques are stressed here. The clinician should not overweight negative results obtained with these techniques and every time include in the differential diagnosis brainstem tumors.
Four anatomo-clinical cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (spongiform encephalopathy) are described. In 3 cases the correct diagnosis was made while the patients were living. The most important diagnostic elements are the following: rapid evolution of a presenile or senile dementia, with neurological symptoms unusual in the Alzheimer's disease. The importance of EEG for the diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is confirmed: however the onset of the typical EEG abnormalities was very late in its manifestation, the CT alterations are in general absent or very limited. The pathological alterations are aspecific. The spongiform process was sometimes scarce or limited to specific cerebral areas.
A clinical-pathological study is presented concerning a patient affected by a demential syndrome at a young age (32 years). The neurological examination of the patient disclosed an asymmetry of the deep reflexes and a pale optic disk in both eyes. The pathological examination showed a typical MS, with extensive involvement of the frontal lobes. From our case and from those rarely reported in the literature, it appears that a demential syndrome can rarely be symptomatic of an initial MS. However even in these exceptional cases some neurological signs suggestive of MS are usually present.
The clinical use of S.E.R. (Somesthesic Evoked Responses) from the lower limbs has peculiar prognostic value in cases of spinal pathology with clinical signs of transection, where other neuroradiological investigations are not helpful. However, in the present case of acute trasverse myelitis, persistence of an evoked response from the lower limbs was never followed by signs of recovery below the lesional level, while autopsy showed a complete degeneration of the descending spinal pathways with a good preservation of the posterior roots. The limits of this technique appear connected to the fact that the afferent volley of the S.E.R. travels exclusively along the posterior roots, not allowing a definite prognostic evaluation about function of the remainder descending pathways.

The effects of surface finish on flexural strength of a feldspathic porcelain, aluminous porcelain, and a computer aided design-computer aided machining porcelain (Vitabloc MKI) were examined. A total of 105 bars of the feldspathic ceramic were made, randomly divided into seven groups, and sintered according to manufacturer's recommendations. The groups consisted of as-fired, self-glazed, overglazed, ground, polished, ground/annealed, and polished/annealed. A total of 45 bars of the aluminous ceramic and Vitabloc MKI were made and randomly divided into three groups: as-fired, ground, and polished. Overglazing, grinding, and polishing all significantly increased (P < .05) the flexural strength (four-point-bend test) of the tested materials (15% to 30%).
The incidence of abdominal aortic aneurysm and colorectal cancer association is 0.5-1%. This concomitance of two potentially lethal diseases creates a decision making problem regarding priority of treatment. The Authors report a case in which colorectal cancer and abdominal aortic aneurysm were present. This patient first underwent surgery for colorectal cancer, then for aortic aneurysm. Moreover, the Authors review the Literature and discuss their decisional principles about treatment priorities.
