Antifungal action of latex saps from Lactuca sativa L. and Asclepias curassavica L.

Asclepias curassavica and Lactuca sativa latex saps inhibit the growth of Candida albicans because they degrade a great number of yeasts. This was confirmed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy observations. After a contact of 4 h and 6 h yeasts are deformed and emptied of their cytoplasmic content. Moreover, it appears that these saps, particularly Asclepias, also act on the cell wall: the substances presumed to be responsible for these effects were probably terpens and cardenolids but also enzymes, in particular glucanases.

Safety and efficacy anticoagulation in extracorporeal hemodialysis by simultaneous administration of low-dose prostacyclin and low molecular weight heparin.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this work is to describe an approach allowing extracorporeal hemodialysis (HD) with administration of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) and to compare the dialyzer efficiency of this approach versus infractionated heparin (UFH) used alone. METHODS: Low molecular weight heparin (Nadroparin, molecular weight 4500 d) administered in a single injection (dose 3075 IU AXa) plus prostacyclin (Epoprostenol sodium salt, molecular weight 375 d) by continuous infusion (3 ng/kg/min) have been used as anticoagulants during hemodialysis in 8 patients. In comparison, standard continuous heparinization by unfractionated heparin was used. Hemodialysis efficiency (dialyzer clearance for urea, creatinine, uric acid and phosphate), coagulation (activated partial thromboplastin time, antithrombin III, fibrinogen platelet count, prothrombin time) and hemodynamic parameters (blood arterial pressure and heart rate) were also evaluated during dialysis. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Simultaneous infusion of low molecular weight heparin plus prostacyclin allowed safe and effective anticoagulation without affecting hemodialysis efficiency.

Automatic differential blood counting in plasma cell leukemia.

The authors report a case of primary plasma cell leukemia and two cases of multiple myeloma with a large number of circulating plasma cells. The display of Technicon H-1 shows a very high "cloud" in the area of large unstained cells. A massive invasion of the basophil area was not found. Differences between these results and those found in different lymphoid leukemias are discussed.

Measurement of urinary albumin excretion (UAE) in diabetic patients: immunonephelometry versus radioimmunoassay.

We have compared the chemico-clinical characteristics of an immuno-nephelometric technique (INA) with those of a solid-phase radioimmunoassay (RIA) method for the measurement of urinary albumin excretion (UAE) in diabetic patients. The UAE was evaluated in 227 diabetics; all, except 9, were Albustix-negative. The calibration of the nephelometer apparatus every time before the assay did significantly improve the accuracy and precision of the INA method. Similar values were obtained with the two methods (INA = 2.1 + 0.95 RIA, n = 227, r = 0.969) through all the ranges of albumin concentration explored. INA seems as suitable as RIA for the assay of UAE in diabetics. The two methods are comparably accurate and precise. However, RIA appears more sensitive than INA, while immunonephelometric system is easier and faster to perform (up to 200 samples can be assayed in about 1 hour, while 2-4 hours are necessary with RIA), with fewer handling steps. The INA instrumentation is automated and the reagents are more stable and less hazardous than those used in RIA. However, due to the cost of the nephelometer apparatus, the INA technique may be employed by those laboratories which have already this instrumentation or by those which will use it in the next future for the assay of other analytes in addition to albumin.
