Accuracy of fine needle aspiration biopsy in neck masses.

One hundred thirty-eight fine needle aspirations (FNA) of neck masses were performed during a four-year period (1979-1982). The pre-existing literature was reviewed. An accuracy rate of 85% in FNA of neck masses was found, and a 100% accuracy rate in cases of benign tumors of the neck and developmental cysts of the neck was found.

Osteogenic sarcoma of the temporal bone.

A case of osteogenic sarcoma of the temporal bone is reported. Most probably the sarcoma was induced by previous irradiation. The patient was treated by a wide temporal bone resection, but the tumour recurred three months after operation. The possibility of late-induced osteosarcoma of the temporal bone must be kept in mind when planning the irradiation of tumours of the nasopharynx.

Oral contraceptive pills and clinical otosclerosis.

Clinical otosclerosis is a familial disease which is more frequent among women in their reproductive years. The condition usuallly is aggravated by pregnancy. Endocrinologic variables may influence the time of onset and the course of the disease. It is suspected that oral contraceptives (OCs) might stimulate the onset of the disease. Six hundred nulliparous women between the ages of 16 and 30, who used a variety of OCs for 12-36 months, were examined. The hearing of these women was thoroughly investigated. The first audiometric examination of the 600 women revealed three cases (0.5%) of clinical otosclerosis. This incidence is equal to that of the population as a whole, but lower than the incidence found in previously parous women. Audiometric examinations were normal in the remaining 597 women, and repeated examinations revealed no new cases of clinical otosclerosis, despite continuous OC use.

Breathing disorders in sleep associated with "microarousals' in patients with allergic rhinitis.

The influence of obstructed nasal passages was investigated in l4 patients with allergic rhinitis. Disordered breathing in sleep was found in all patients in the form of periodic breathing, and hypopneic and hyperpneic episodes, associated with characteristic "microarousals' from sleep. Patients had an average of 50 "microarousals' from sleep, ten times more than normal controls. It is suggested that increased upper airway resistance and increased nasal discharge are responsible for the disordered breathing in sleep and for the "microarousals'.
