Stimulation on exposed dentine at the enamo-dentinal junction is often painful and uncomfortable for the affected patient. Two hundred and forty-four subjects suffering from dentinal sensitivity, aged from 18 to 48 years old, were treated with two types of desensitizing agent. In this study, we used sodium fluoride (Duraflor) and calcium hydroxide (Dycal catalyst). The desensitizing agent is first applied on the exposed dentine and then burnished, without local anaesthesia, until all sensitivity has disappeared. After the first session, 100% of the subjects were desensitized. All subjects were seen 1, 2, 3, 6, 13 and 26 weeks after the first application. After 6 months, 94% of the subjects treated with calcium hydroxide (Dycal) and 87% of those treated with sodium fluoride (Duraflor) were still desensitized. This difference is statistically significant at alpha = 0.01 (Anova test). In conclusion, our study reveals that both calcium hydroxide (Dycal) and sodium fluoride (Duraflor) are effective in the treatment of dentinal hypersensitivity. A slight significant advantage in using calcium hydroxide is also noted.
This study investigated the alternate forms reliability of four type-token ratios (TTRs) of oral language samples obtained from 52 elementary school children (9 through 12 years of age). The four TTRs included the basic type-token ratio, the corrected type-token ratio, the root type-token ratio, and the bilogarithmic type-token ratio. Language samples of 600 words were segmented into 50-word, 100-word, and 200-word samples. Within each TTR measure, there were no significant differences among the means for samples of the same size, but all means for a given sample size differed significantly from the means of all other sample sizes. Further, for samples of the same size the reliability coefficients calculated for each TTR measure were neither consistent nor significant. These findings indicate that under the conditions of the present study TTRs are not comparable when calculated for different sample sizes ranging from 50 to 600 words, and further, that they are not reliable measures of the language performance of individual elementary school children from regular classrooms for language samples of 50 to 200 words.
During the last few years, we have had to face the sad reality and statistics related to hepatitis B and AIDS. These two infectious entities are in fact the major cause of concern for dentists in their capacity as health professionals. This article reviews certain legislative points of view which should help every dentist in their decision as to whether to treat these so-called "infectious" or "contagious" patients.
A comparative study of ten (10) products recommended for disinfection and/or sterilization of dental instruments is detailed. Four (4) out of fourteen (14) characteristics have been evaluated, namely corrosive power, monthly cost, odor and availability.
Chemotherapeutic agents appear to offer a great potential in the treatment of periodontal disease in conjunction with root planning and/or surgical approach. One of these chemotherapeutic agents is spiramycin. The aim of this paper is to review some data about the spiramycin in vitro, in vivo, the effects of spiramycin on plaque control and some interesting hypothesis on action of spiramycin.
More than two million individuals die each year as a result of infection from the hepatitis B virus, either directly from fulgurant hepatitis, or in the majority of cases, from the long term after-effects. The high risk groups, the reasons for cross contamination, the various ways of transmitting the disease, the rate which individuals are being vaccinated against hepatitis B, the vaccines and the recommendations for controlling transmission are some of the subjects related to in the article. The dentist and the dental team must function with a viable asepsis protocol.
Impression materials and impression trays must be cleaned and disinfected before being used and adjusted in the mouth, or sent to the laboratory. This article reviews some of the practical recommendations for dental offices and laboratories.
For periodontal treatment, the use and choice of antibiotics is a controversial matter. There are many medical reasons for prescribing antibiotics before, during and after periodontal treatment. The purpose of this paper is to review the indications and reasons for antibiotherapy in periodontics. Research is not very advanced in this domain and there is a need to understand the indications for antibiotherapy in periodontics.

The purpose of this study was to test the effect of high voltage stimulation (HVS) on edema reduction in the rat hindpaw. The animals were divided into a control group (n = 20) and a treated group (n = 20). The right hindpaw volume was measured, and then the animal's paw was traumatized. The animals in the treated group were treated with HVS at 24, 48, and 72 hours posttrauma. Paw volume measurements were made on all animals at 0, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours posttrauma. In addition, the paw volume was measured in the treated group both before and after HVS. The results showed that animals in both groups had a significant decrease in paw volume over the experimental period, but no significant difference was found between the two groups in the amount of edema reduction. The HVS treatment did not produce a significant change in paw volume immediately after treatment.

This study investigated the reactions of college students to audiotaped speech samples of a woman simulating moderate speech disorders of stuttering, hypernasality, and lateral lisping, as well as presenting normal speech. Student reactions to these recordings were measured by a figure placement task and a 30-item semantic differential instrument. The students reacted to the speech disorders with a tendency of increased social distance in addition to judgments of lower evaluation, lower understandability, and higher anxiety. These findings suggest that students react negatively to speech disorders. Awareness of such reactions could facilitate clinical effectiveness and prepare clinicians to protect clients' rights.
This study investigated the stability of five type-token ratios (TTRs) in 50-utterance oral language samples segmented into nine lengths. The samples were obtained from 83 children, 3, 4, and 5 years of age. The five TTRs included the basic type-token ratio, the corrected type-token ratio, the root type-token ratio, the bilogarithmic type-token ratio, and the Characteristic K. The sample segment sizes consisted of the first, second, third, and fourth 50-word segments; the first and second 100-word segments; the first 150-word segment; the first 200-word segment; and the total 50-utterance sample. Based on the results of this study, TTR measures on the language of young children should not be compared for samples that differ in number of words. Further, TTR measures for sample size of 50 and 100 words have reliabilities that are judged to be inadequate for research or clinical purposes. The size of the language sample needed for minimum reliability of .70 is 350 words. Greater reliability requires larger word-sample size.
