Prevalence of oral lesions in a selected Vietnamese population.

Clinical examination of the oral and peri-oral regions of a cohort of 550 Vietnamese living in a refugee camp in Hong Kong was conducted. They comprised 216 (39 per cent) males and 334 (61 per cent) females and their age ranged from 2 to 60 years. A positive clinical finding was observed in 14 per cent, 35 males and 43 females. The most common condition observed was periapical infection (36 per cent), either with an abscess or a sinus. Other lesions noted include mucocele (10 per cent), traumatic ulcers (9 per cent), tori, either palatal (6 per cent) or mandibular (3 per cent), lymph node enlargement (7 per cent), pulp polyp (6 per cent), angular cheilitis (4 per cent), papillomas (3 per cent), cellulitis (3 per cent) and herpes lesions (2 per cent), 7 out of 9 (78 per cent) mucoceles were found in females. No malignant lesions were noted.

Quality management in nursing.

Nursing care is the number one criterion patients use to measure the quality of care at hospitals. With the trend toward a more integrated institutionwide approach to quality, nursing must adapt its traditional approach to complement an institutionwide quality management strategy. Although written standards have been the cornerstone of nursing quality management, they have not always stood up to objective measurement techniques. Only recently has nursing been using automated data for measuring nursing quality. This article provides an example of how nursing can use automated data to measure and manage the quality of nursing services.

Synthesis and beta-lactamase inhibitory properties of 2 beta-(chloromethyl)-2 alpha-methylpenam-3 alpha-carboxylic acid 1,1-dioxide.

Potassium 2 beta-(chloromethyl)-2 alpha-methylpenam-3 alpha-carboxylate 1,1-dioxide (BL-P2013) and its pivaloyloxymethyl ester were prepared by the conversion of 6-aminopenicillanic acid to p-nitrobenzyl 6 alpha-bromo-2,2-dimethylpenam-3 alpha-carboxylate 1-oxide, which was rearranged with benzoyl chloride and quinoline to p-nitrobenzyl 6 alpha-bromo-2 beta-(chloromethyl)-2 alpha-methylpenam-3 alpha-carboxylate in 65% yield. Oxidation and catalytic hydrogenation afforded BL-P2013, which was found to be a potent inhibitor of various bacterial beta-lactamases and has been found to protect amoxicillin from beta-lactamases in both in vitro and in vivo systems.

Relationships between flow and NMR relaxation of fluids in porous solids.

Measurements are presented which correlate the displacements, X(Delta), determined by PGSE NMR, with the multi-mode transverse 1H NMR relaxation of water flowing through a glass bead pack, for which the dominant relaxation mechanism is diffusion through inhomogeneous internal magnetic fields. Analytical solution for the joint amplitude A[X(Delta), T(2k)] for the case of laminar flow in a circular pipe, with a diffusion-to-surface mechanism, shows that, for other than the lowest mode (k = 0), the contributions to the observed relaxation for a given X(Delta) may involve negative as well as positive amplitudes. The experimental measurements are shown to agree with this general conclusion, showing clear evidence of the presence of relaxation modes with negative amplitude at larger values of X(Delta). It is shown that in these, or similar measurements, which provide a spatially-resolved view of surface-mediated relaxation, allowance must be made for fitting with both positive and negative amplitudes.
