Suppression of pupal esterase activity in Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) by an insect growth regulator.

Changes in non-specific esterases of Aedes aegypti were noted during pupal development. One esterase band was found to increase markedly within 3 h of pupation and this increase in activity was suppressed by prior treatment of larvae with an insect growth regulator, ZR 515. It is suggested that the esterase activity may help to reduce endogenous levels of juvenile hormone during metamorphosis and that the growth regulator may prevent this normal regulation.

An introduction of smoothing incidence rates by penalized likelihood.

Most recent developments in the smoothing of disease incidence rates have involved empirical Bayes procedures. Through the introduction of an intersite distance penalty, the pooling of information by directly penalizing the maximum likelihood estimates is proposed. A distance type statistic tests a null hypothesis of homogeneity among the rates and is applied to gastric cancer incidence of Nova Scotia municipalities. For various spatial patterns, simulation results are presented which investigate the power of the test, the total mean squared error and the distribution of the smoothed estimates.

Phosphatidylinositol kinase and phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate kinase activities in Md 66 insect cell line.

Phosphatidylinositol kinase (PI kinase) and phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate kinase (PIP kinase) activities in an insect cell line (Md 66) were studied by measuring the incorporation of 32P from [gamma-32P] ATP into phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate (PIP) and phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) respectively. The apparent Km values of phosphatidylinositol kinase and phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate kinase for ATP were 78.5 microM and 71.7 microM respectively. PIP kinase activity was enhanced by GTP analogue guanosine 5-O(thio)triphosphate (GTP gamma S).
