We have studied the effect of bromocriptine in seven patients with idiopathic oedema. Two patients were unable to tolerate the drug; the remaining five were maintained on doses of between 5 and 7.5 mg a day. Symptomatic improvement was noted in two patients and in both of these and one other there was a significant improvement in mean diurnal weight gain. The fall in free water and sodium clearance on standing was reduced by bromocriptine, but there was no significant change in the excessive fall in plasma volume.
The official first action method, 44.108, for the extraction of light filth from whole or chopped canned greens specifies a water-heptane flotation that results in the flotation of an excessive amount of interfering plant material and in low recoveries. A new method has been developed using a 40% isopropanol-water-mineral oil flotation. The new method yielded a decreased amount of plant material and 84.9% recovery of the aphid spike compared with 42.5% recovery of the spike by the official method. The new method has been adopted as official first action to replace the existing method, except for broccoli.
In a study of 250 patients with autoimmune thyroid disease, seven (2.8%) were found to have polymyalgia rheumatica or giant cell arteritis. All cases occurred in female patients over the age of 60 years, a prevalence in this group of 9.3%. No cases of either disorder were seen in a control population of 150 female patients over the age of 50 years attending a cardiac clinic at the same hospital. Awareness of this association may allow earlier diagnosis and treatment of this syndrome in elderly patients with thyroid disease.
An improved method has been developed for the extraction of light filth from 5 ground spices, ginger, white pepper, coriander, celery seed, and cardamom. The method, a modification of 44.120, utilizes a cold isopropanol defatting, followed by wet sieving and flotation of light filth from 40% isopropanol with HCl and mineral oil-heptane (85 + 15). Collaborative results show that the proposed method is more rapid to perform than the present official first action methods, 44.116 and 44.120, and yields better recoveries. The method has been adopted as official first action.
Canned carbmeat is boiled with mineral oil in a Wildman trap flask. The trappings are transferred to a Corning percolator and cycled at least 3 times. Average recoveries from 7 collaborators were 82.7% for rodent hairs and 98.0% for flies. The proposed method has been adopted as official first action.

Fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2) is a neurotrophic factor that regulates many neuronal functions and survival. We have characterised FGF-2 expression immunohistochemically in the cerebellum of young (4 months) and old (22 months) mice. About half of the population of the granule cells (GC), and all Purkinje cells (PC) expressed FGF-2 in all folia of the cerebellum at both ages. FGF-2 showed differential intracellular localization: predominantly localised to the nuclei of GC and present mainly in the cytosol of PC. There was a statistically significant (P = 0.0028) reduction in the number of FGF-2-positive GC in the cerebella of old (41.3+/-0.91%) compared to young (48.5+/-1.67%) mice, whereas no statistically significant age-dependent difference occurred in the number of FGF-2 positive PC. These results indicate a possible role of FGF-2 in cerebellar ageing.
The present method for filth in underground marjoram is conducted in 2 parts. The first of these, which is for heavy filth and sand, requires the spice to be boiled with petroleum ether, then floated off with chloroform and, if needed, carbon tetrachloride. The second part, which is for light filth, is dependent on completion of the heavy filth section. After the spice is air-dried, the light filth is extracted with heptane and water. The proposed method was developed to make light filth independent of heavy filth analysis, improve filth recoveries, and reduce microscopic examination time. The light filth is extracted by ethanol defatting followed by a combination 15-60% ethanol/mineral oil extraction in a Wildman trap flask. Tween 80-NaEDTA solution is added to the trapping system to reduce the rising of excess plant material to the trap interface. The official method (AOAC 13th edition secs 44.142, 44.120(b)) produced an average of 8 extraction papers per test portion and microscopic examination took an average of 88 min per test portion. The official method gave average recoveries of 14% for rodent hairs and 26% for insect fragments with 2 spike levels of 15 and 30 for each filth element. Recoveries of the 2 levels of each spike were not significantly different (P greater than 0.05). The proposed method gave average recoveries of 73% for rodent hairs and 70% for insect fragments. The proposed method has been adopted official first action to replace AOAC 13th edition secs 44.142 and 44.120(b) for unground marjoram only.
