Immune complexes in blood: a new strategy for the analysis of their antigen portion.
A method is described for the characterization of protein antigens from circulating immune complexes from plasma. Free immunoglobulins G were separated from larger immune complexes by gel filtration with a fast protein liquid chromatographic system. The collected immune complexes were dissociated with 4M urea into antigens and antibodies. With a second column run with 4M urea, antigens smaller than 120 kDa were separated from unloaded antibody fractions. After concentration, they were analyzed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
On-line analysis of the GSR.
The study reports the use of lambda, a measure of sequential dependency developed by Lathrop (1964) in connection with electrodermal activity. Thirteen female subjects, ranging in age from 19 to 53, participated in a simple repeat-stimulus habituation experiment: GSR data in percent-change and lambda were compared. A high, positive correlation was obtained. Consequently, the use of lambda is advocated because it shows both initial value and sequential dependency and meets the criteria for analysis based on the probability of statistics such as t and F.
Cardiac activity in a simple reaction time task: predictive value of personality measures.
Twenty subjects, half having high extraversion and the other half having low extraversion scores on the Eysenck Personality Inventory, performed a simple reaction time task in which the warning stimulus was a light and the imperative stimulus was a tone. Beat-by-beat analysis showed significantly different response patterns between the two groups in time of onset, magnitude, and duration of the cardiac responses. The extraversion measures were found to relate to central-nervous-system-strength types and to indicate relative strength of central inhibitory processes, as reflected by cardiac activity.
Computer-assisted, operator-interactive technique for calculating pulmonary arterial taper.
We have developed a computer-assisted, operator-interactive technique which performs fast, precise computations of pulmonary artery taper. Individual 35-mm cineframes from balloon-occlusion pulmonary arteriograms are digitized into a 640 X 480 matrix in 8-bit depth and loaded into a VAX 11/780 computer for analysis. After operator identification of the arterial segment, an automated process of caliber analysis is initiated. By fitting a cubic spline function to the densitometric profiles extracted from the arterial segment, serial arterial cross-sectional diameters are calculated from the mathematically-derived points along the fitted curves. Spurious profiles, caused by sectioning at bifurcations, can be overridden by an operator-interactive subroutine. Taper is derived from the slope of the least-squares fit of vessel caliber with respect to its distance along the arterial segment. Results obtained by calculations from the computer-assisted caliber measurements were compared with those obtained by hand-tracing the same vessel segments. Correlation between computer-traced inflection points and hand-traced taper was very significant (r = .96, n = 13, P less than 0.001).
Behavioral control of intractable idiopathic seizures: I. Self-regulation of end-tidal carbon dioxide.
Eleven women and seven men with moderate to severe chronic hyperventilation and idiopathic seizures refractory to therapeutic serum levels of anticonvulsant medication were given diaphragmatic respiration training with percent end-tidal CO2 biofeedback. The training had a rapid correcting effect on their respiration, making it comparable to that of 18 asymptomatic control subjects. Ten of the seizure-group subjects were in the study at least 7 months and following treatment, 8 showed EEG power spectrum "normalization", restoration of cardio-respiratory synchrony (RSA), and their seizure frequency and severity were significantly reduced.
