Implementation of a token economy by peer tutors to increase on-task physical activity time of autistic children.

The data generated in this study were graphed for visual inspection of the raw data and means. Of the 5 subjects, 4 improved their time on task on the balance beam in at least one of the intervention phases. The other subject did not improve during the intervention phases but, there was a positive slope in the final intervention phase which might have continued had the intervention been longer. Further study is required.

Use of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for visually impaired athletes.

This report detailed the reliability of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory when the test statements were presented verbally and in the traditional manner to undergraduates, 19 men and 17 women, who were physical education majors. In the standardized manner subjects read the statements silently to themselves; in the other administration statements were read aloud. The inventory then was administered twice verbally to 15 elite visually impaired women athletes. Both the state and trait subscales of this inventory are reliable if presented across or within modalities. The inventory, when presented verbally, might be appropriately used by visually impaired athletes in psychological preparation prior to competition.

Multicomponent RNA plant virus infection derived from cloned viral cDNA.

In vitro transcripts from mixtures of appropriate brome mosaic virus (BMV) cDNA clones are infectious when inoculated onto barley plants. Infectivity depends on in vitro transcription and on the presence of transcripts from clones of all three BMV genetic components. Infectivity is destroyed by RNase after transcription, but it is insensitive to RNase before or to DNase after transcription. Virion RNAs from plants infected with cDNA transcripts hybridize to BMV-specific probes and coelectrophorese with virion RNAs propagated from conventional inoculum. Direct RNA sequencing shows that a deletion in the noncoding region of one infectious BMV clone is preserved in viral RNA from plants systemically infected with transcript mixtures representing that clone.

Behavior of male rats fed low levels of metallic salts.

Male rats at 44 days of age were fed diets ad lib containing the following in ppm by weight: Co++(75), Cu++(75), Fe+++(150), Mn++(75), Ni++(75), Pb++(10) and Zn++(75), the controls receiving the basal ration. At days 55-56 of feeding, the rats were subjected to the poke test and no remarkable differences could be discerned in the 5-minute ratings; for the first one-minute scores, a small but significant change was apparent with Fe+++ vs Pb++. Performance of the animals in a runway was ascertained at days 73-74 of feeding and discounting the poor performers, namely, those which did not run the maze in 100 seconds, only few definite differences were noted (Zn++ vs Pb++ and Mn++ vs Pb++).

Treatment of subglottic hemangioma with the carbon dioxide laser.

Congenital subglottic hemangioma is a potentially life-threatening lesion usually presenting in the first three months of life. Over the years, multiple treatment modalities have been advocated. However, none has been uniformly successful, and morbidity and mortality remain high. With the advent of the carbon dioxide surgical laser, it soon became apparent that this was an ideal tool for the pediatric larynx. The already documented properties of the laser have led to the application of this form of tissue destruction in 11 patients with subglotic hemangioma. This modality has proven to be a safe, effective and rapid means of treating this troublesome lesion.

Static and dynamic balance skills of trainable children with Down's syndrome.

This study compared static and dynamic balance performance of 25 subjects with Down's Syndrome and 25 without Down's Syndrome; controls were placed on CA and IQ. No significant difference between the two samples' static balance performance was noted; subjects with the Down's Syndrome had significantly superior dynamic balance performance.

West Nile virus surveillance in Connecticut in 2000: an intense epizootic without high risk for severe human disease.

In 1999, Connecticut was one of three states in which West Nile (WN) virus actively circulated prior to its recognition. In 2000, prospective surveillance was established, including monitoring bird deaths, testing dead crows, trapping and testing mosquitoes, testing horses and hospitalized humans with neurologic illness, and conducting a human seroprevalence survey. WN virus was first detected in a dead crow found on July 5 in Fairfield County. Ultimately, 1,095 dead crows, 14 mosquito pools, 7 horses, and one mildly symptomatic person were documented with WN virus infection. None of 86 hospitalized persons with neurologic illness (meningitis, encephalitis, Guillain-Barré-like syndrome) and no person in the seroprevalence survey were infected. Spraying in response to positive surveillance findings was minimal. An intense epizootic of WN virus can occur without having an outbreak of severe human disease in the absence of emergency adult mosquito management.

Computerized reporting and follow-up of gynecologic cytology.

A system utilizing inexpensive computer hardware to produce high-quality cytology report and to provide an extensive, semi-automated follow-up system is described. Key features of the reports generated are emphasized. The system uses the Bethesda System nomenclature for reporting cytologic findings to a wide range of physicians, from general practitioners to gynecologists to subspecialists in gynecologic oncology.
