An example of spontaneous migration of a metallic foreign body within the subarachnoid space is illustrated. An intracranial bullet is shown to move within the cisterns of the posterior fossa and then down the subarachnoid space of the spinal canal. The patient's symptoms correlate well with the movement of the foreign body.
Specific amino acid sequence segments have been assigned to locations in the structural map of bacteriorhodopsin using two-dimensional neutron diffraction data and a model building analysis. Models are constructed computationally by building specific regions of the amino acid sequence as alpha helices and then positioning the helices on axes indicated by the density map of Henderson and Unwin (Nature [Lond.]. 1975, 257:28-32). Neutron diffraction data were collected from samples of stacked, oriented "native" purple membranes as well as purple membranes containing different kinds of deuterated amino acids. Models differing in the assignments of helices to specific axes and in rotations of the helices about those axes were tested against the neutron data using a weighted residual factor to rank the models. This residual factor was calculated between observed and predicted intensity differences for pairs of data sets. Using this approach, a small set of related models has been found that predicts the observed intensity changes between five independent data sets. These models are inconsistent with the proposed locations of the retinal chromophore and the carboxyl terminus and with any of the previously proposed models for bacteriorhodopsin.
Calciphylaxis occurs in renal transplant patients more frequently than in chronic hemodialysis patients. It can occur in a patient with normal renal function who is also normocalcemic. Early parathyroidectomy can lead to healing of the skin lesions and prevent death of sepsis.
Nonretarded (n = 12) and retarded (n = 12) Mexican children matched on chronological age were given the Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT). The results indicated that the MFFT was appropriate for use with Mexican retarded and nonretarded subjects. Comparisons between groups showed retarded performers to be less efficient information processors than nonretarded subjects. The two groups did not differ in cognitive style. Cross cultural comparisons of MFFT scores with normative data on American children were described within the constraints of the restrictive characteristics of the Mexican sample.
The issue of gaining research access to mentally retarded children attending public schools is discussed. Preliminary steps completed prior to conducting a research investigation in the school settings were described within the framework of two independent studies. The important role of the special education teacher in conducting research in the natural environment is delineated.
Four patients with acute leukemia received transplants from HLA-mismatched, related donors. Marrow cells that had been depleted of T lymphocytes using a monoclonal anti-T-lymphocyte antibody and rabbit complement were used. In vitro studies showed that 80-97% of the mature T lymphocytes were removed using this procedure. Infusion of the treated marrow was accomplished without complications, and engraftment occurred in each case. Graft-versus-host disease occurred in 3 of the 4 patients. These results show that additional manipulations of the marrow will be required to allow complete T lymphocyte removal from the marrow before the feasibility of this approach in HLA-mismatched patients can be determined.

Triceps skinfold thickness and body weight measures were obtained for 44 female and 40 male mentally retarded adults participating in a sheltered workshop setting. Subjects' relative weights and skinfold thicknesses were found to correlate reasonably well for females and males, rs = .88 and .59, respectively. Use of only height and weight tables for determining the presence of obesity, however, resulted in 22.5 percent of the males and 13.7 percent of the females being misclassified as nonobese. The distinction between overweight and obesity was discussed. Clinical/research implications of the findings were delineated.
An obese group and a nonobese group of moderately mentally retarded adults were identified through use of body weight and tricep skinfold thickness measures. Subjects were observed individually in a sheltered workshop cafeteria during their normal lunch period. A variety of eating behavior measures were obtained. Results indicated that the obese retarded subjects did not differ from their nonobese peers in eating rate, total meal time, or caloric intake. Large variability was observed in the measures for both groups. Implications of these data for behavioral treatments of obesity and the need for alternative explanations of an obese condition were discussed.
When a small number of lights are placed on the limbs and joints of a moving human (or animal), the motions of the lights (biological motion) are sufficient to enable adult observers to perceive immediately the activity of the human. This perception of biological motion has been hypothesized to be an intrinsic capacity of the visual system. The results of this experiment, which demonstrate that infants 4 to 6 months of age exhibit a preference for biological motion patterns, support that hypothesis.

Using monoclonal antibodies to cell surface antigens and fluorescent cell sorter analysis, we studied peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets after bone marrow transplantation (BMT). In 13 patients studied 3 mo or more after BMT, the ratio of T-cell subsets defined by antibodies OKT4 and OKT8 was reversed (OKT4/OK%8 = 0.7 +/- 0.3) in comparison to normal volunteers or bone marrow donors (ratio OKT4/OKT8 = 1.7 +/- 0.4) (p less than 0.001). This reversed ratio persisted for up to 3 yr after BMT. In contrast to a previous report, presence of an abnormal ratio of T-cell subsets did not correlate with clinically significant graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). In agreement with a previous study, (26% +/- 8%; less than 4% in normals (p less than 0.001) and antibody OKT10 reactive cells (39% +/- 20% versus 10% +/- 4%) (p less than 0.01), suggesting in vivo activation. However, their PBL did not react with antibody B3/25 (antitransferrin receptor), a marker found on normal PBL after in vitro activation by mitogens (BMT patients less than 5%; normal PBL T cells plus PHA 45% +/- 11%). These results demonstrate that BMT patients have: (A) an abnormal ratio of T-cell subsets in the presence or absence of clinically significant GVDH disease so that these measurements were not useful in monitoring patients; (B) an increased number of T cells with cell surface phenotype (OKT8+, Ia+, OKT10+, B3/25-) that is distinct from normals but similar to patients with infectious mononucleosis or acquired hypogammaglobulinemia.
