[Vitamin A consumption in pregnant and non pregnant rats, and in castrated rats receiving or not receiving estradiol or pregnenolone; relation to tocopherol and cytochrome P-450].

Consumption of vitamin A and cytochrome P 450 by pregnant Rat is more important than in non pregnant and ovariectomised Rat. Estradiol implant in ovariectomised female has some, but slighter, influence only on retinol. These physiological situations have no action on the hepatic levels of tocopherols (total and alpha). These results are discussed.

Metabolic changes in red blood cells in malignant lymphomas.

Serum copper levels (SCL) which are concomitantly related to red blood cell free copper are significantly increased in some malignant lymphomas in the phase of activity. This results in a profound inhibition of red cell key glycolytic enzymes, hexokinase (Hx) being the most sensitive. Fifteen patients (eight with Hodgkin's disease and seven with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma) were studied for serum and red cell copper concentrations and Hx activity. The mean red cell life span was determined using 51Cr labelled red cells. The resulting data shows that in active disease an increase in SCL was associated with a decrease in Hx activity and a shortened red cell survival. In these cases there was no evidence of autoimmune phenomena or of direct bone marrow involvement by the disease. It is suggested that the increase in copper levels results in a shortened red cell life span through a copper-induced inhibition of red cell Hx.

[Induction of cytochrome P 450 by phenobarbital in cats].

Phenobarbital administration to the Cat an animal hypersensitive to the actions of many toxic substances or to physiological compounds such as hormones, does not produce cytochrome P 450 induction. Consequently, hepatic storage of retinol remains unchanged. The specific and original characteristics of the Cat in this field are underlined by these results.

[Toxicity by relay. III. Safety for the human consumer of the use of Carbadox, a feed additive for swine, as estimated by a 7 years relay toxicity on dogs].

To check the possible toxicity risks of the meat from swine fed with a residue producing feed additive: Carbadox, a new methodology was used. It is the "Relay Toxicity". Swine were fed with a high dose of the additive and sacrificed without any withdrawal. In such conditions meat contains a high level of residues. The frozen meat was given daily--after thawing--at 100 g or 200 g/dog to 12 beagle dogs, 6 females and 6 males, sacrificed when 87.5 months old (85 months on experiment). On these animals, no anomaly was found: on weight gain and health; on fertility and reproductive performances; on hematology and biochemical values of blood and urine; and after careful macroscopic or microscopic examinations of the animals at safrice. We were able to obtain a safety factor above 9000 when Carbadox is used at the maximum level approved 50 ppm, and the withdrawal 4 weeks before slaughtering. To conclude, the absence of anomaly allows us to confirm the safety for the human consumer when Carbadox is used as a feed additive for swine.

[Joint effects of dietary protein levels and vitamin A additions on the induction of cytochrome P450 by DDT in rats].

A 5 P. 100 level of protein from casein in a diet does not allow vitamin A to modify significantly induction of cytochrome P 450 on the Rat receiving or not receiving DDT. When the protein increases to a 15 p. 100 level, the induction is better providing vitamin A is to be given. If protein and vitamin A are necessary for cytochrom P 450 induction, an increase of protein level remains inefficient without vitamin A.

["Milk aflatoxin" and transfer of toxicity].

Diet including 20 p. 100 of lyophilised milk produced by Goat who consumes peanut meals containing 1,530, 79 and 54 microng/kg aflatoxins with 1,136, 64 and 54 microng/kg aflatoxin B1, is given to duckling during 23 days. There is no influence of this diet on growth, feed efficiency and liver or kidney histology. In contrast, direct consummation of Peanut meal, with the highest level of aflatoxins, produces 18 p. 100 mortality and characteristic injuries of aflatoxiocsis.

[Vitamin A-vitamin D3 relationship in growing rats].

A relation vitamin A - vitamin D3 exists in diet for growing rats. When this decreases from 5 (microgram A - IU D3) or 15 (IU A - IU D3) to 1,25 (microgram/IU) or 3,75 (IU/IU) growth, calcemia are increasing but vitamin A hepatic storage is decreasing. In other words for a same quantity of retinol, cholecalciferol's level in diet determines hepatic stores of vitamin A. General aspect of this question is discussed.

Animal Nutritional Physiological Phenomena

[Diet imbalances and aflatoxicosis].

Generally we know influences of diet's balances or imbalances upon toxicants. Some actions appear with aflatoxins as shown by studies on rat, pig, calf, poultry, turkey and duckling. According to species considered, oral administration of aflatoxins reduces food consummation, Nitrogen balance, respiratory coefficient. Therefore those modifications may be induced by a decrease of foodstuffs ingestion. It has been underlined that hypoproteic diet increases intoxication and diet rich in lipotropic factors decreases it. The greatest number of experiments carried out are concerning vitamins A and D. Authors are recounting their own experimentations upon relationships between Ducklings, aflatoxicosis, retinol consumption and cholecalciferol deficiency. In Duckling, diet deficient in vitamin D increases aflatoxins toxicity. Some relations exist with cytochrome P 450.

The diagnosis of liver hydatid disease in children by scintigraphy.

The results of scintigraphy in 143 children with suspected hydatid disease are reported. In 65 cases, the presence of cysts as detected by scintigraphy was confirmed at surgery. In 78 cases, scintigraphy ruled out liver hydatid disease. In 52 cases with confirmed liver HC, only conventional colloid scintigraphy was carried out. A review of images is performed. In 13 patients, with a total number of 19 cysts, blood pool liver scintigraphy was done in order to investigate the degree of vascularization of the space-occupying lesion, disclosed earlier by colloid scan, and clarify its nature. A review of images is performed. The importance of the procedure is discussed reaching to the conclusion that it is advantageous to carry out colloid and blood pool liver scintigraphy prior to surgical treatment of liver hydatid disease.
