cDNA sequence, genomic organization, and evolutionary conservation of a novel gene from the WAGR region.

A new gene (239FB) with predominant and differential expression in fetal brain has recently been isolated from a chromosome 11p13-p14 boundary area near FSHB. The corresponding mRNA has an open reading frame of 294 amino acids, a 3' untranslated region of 1247 nucleotides, and a highly GC-rich 5' untranslated region. The coding and 3' UT sequence is specified by 6 exons within nearly 87 kb of isolated genomic locus. The 5' end region of the transcript maps adjacent to the only genomically defined CpG island in a chromosomal subregion that may be associated with part of the mental retardation of some WAGR (Wilms tumor, aniridia, genitourinary anomalies, and mental retardation) syndrome patients. In addition to nucleotide and amino acid similarity to an EST from a normalized infant brain cDNA library, the predicted protein has extensive similarity to two Caenorhabditis elegans polypeptides of, as yet, unknown function. The 239FB locus is, therefore, likely part of a family of genes with two members expressed in human brain. The extensive conservation of the predicted protein suggests a fundamental function of the gene product and will enable evaluation of the role of the 239FB gene in neurogenesis in model organisms.

Dubious value of the "reasonable woman" standard in understanding sexual harassment.

There are problems with the "reasonable woman" concept for sexual harassment cases. Also, the 1995 findings of Baird, et al., although statistically significant, identify very small differences between men and women subjects. "Reasonable woman," as employed in sexual harassment cases, is a culture-bound concept used by some feminists to present a specific worldview in which women are seen in the victim's role, and men are viewed negatively.

A WAGR region gene between PAX-6 and FSHB expressed in fetal brain.

Developmental delay or mental retardation is a frequent component of multi-system anomaly syndromes associated with chromosomal deletions. Isolation of genes involved in the mental dysfunction in these disorders should define loci important in brain formation or function. We have identified a highly conserved locus in the distal part of 11p13 that is prominently expressed in fetal brain. Minimal expression is observed in a number of other fetal tissues. The gene maps distal to PAX-6 but proximal to the loci for brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and the beta subunit of follicle stimulating hormone (FSHB), within a region previously implicated in the mental retardation component of some WAGR syndrome patients. Within fetal brain, the corresponding transcript is prominent in frontal, motor and primary visual cortex as well as in the caudate-putamen. The characteristics of this gene, including the striking evolutionary conservation at the locus, suggest that the encoded protein may function in brain development.

College students say Mike Tyson innocent of rape.

110 students in a southern university were asked to write down whether they considered Mike Tyson guilty or innocent of rape of the beauty contestant for which he was convicted. Ten had no opinion, but of those who did, 80 thought him innocent and only 20 thought him guilty. Then, after seeing the film "Mike Tyson: The Movie" which showed his background as a juvenile delinquent and mentioned his problems with women, the only students who changed judgments from innocent to guilty were 25 white women. All male students and all 15 black students continued to consider him innocent.

Who receives drug education in our schools?: a paradox.

Data from a national survey by the United States Department of Justice of 47,000 households reveals a paradox regarding who receives drug education in primary and secondary schools. Those who would seem to need it the most are least likely to receive it. Thus, blacks receive drug education classes less often than whites, students in central city classes less often than those in other regions, and students who report that drugs are available are also less likely to receive drug education classes than students who report that drugs are not available. The results are paradoxical, but consistent with a study by Denson, Voight, and Eisenman which found that predominantly black schools in Louisiana provided less AIDS education than predominantly white schools.

Denigration of a victim in group psychotherapy by violent vs seductive sex offenders.

Two psychotherapy groups were set up in a prison treatment program, one for violent sex offenders, the other for sex offenders who were less violent and primarily used seduction to obtain sex. Most of the patients were child molesters. Observations showed that over the course of 10 group psychotherapy sessions, 8 out of 10 violent offenders said denigrating things about their victims vs 2 out of 10 seductive offenders. The significant comparison if supported by cross-validation suggests the value of the distinction of violence vs seduction for sex offenders.

The body type/temperament mismatch and self-actualization.

The Catell and Metzner (1993) finding of higher self-actualization among people with body type/temperament mismatch is important and could be viewed as support for a link of creativity with deviance. Also, there is an error in one of their statements, which is corrected here.

Attitudes of Mississippi college students toward David Duke before and after seeing the film Who is David Duke?

The attitudes of 211 students at a university in Mississippi were investigated both before and after seeing the Public Broadcasting Film Who Is David Duke? The film provided evidence of Duke's current racism, anti-Semitism, and pro-Nazi leanings. In a previous study with university students in Louisiana, the majority did not change their attitudes after watching the film (Eisenman, 1993). However, in the present study, students' attitudes showed change in an anti-Duke direction. The findings are discussed and reasons given for the differences between the two samples, and for the popularity of Duke, a former leader of the Ku Klux Klan.

Characteristics of adolescent felons in a prison treatment program.

The entire population of inmates in a prison treatment program for youthful male offenders was studied (N = 43). Based on information from individual and group psychotherapy and from official files, and verified with another therapist, the following was found to be true for more than 50% of the offenders: they had anti-social, anti-authority values; did not know how to be anything other than be a criminal; had been subjected to physical, psychological or sexual abuse, usually by a family member; were members of a minority group, i.e., black or Hispanic; and these were gang members. Whites were less likely to be gang members, but those who were tended to be Skinheads or Stoners. The findings can be used to help professionals understand and work with inmates to alter their criminal lifestyle.

Factors that influence HIV/AIDS instruction in schools.

Sex education is allowed but not required in Louisiana. It is taught at the discretion of local school districts as mandated in the Local Option Sex Education Statute, Act 480. HIV/AIDS education is also optional and may be taught without incorporating sex education policies. In the present study, a survey of ninety-eight public and private schools in Louisiana was conducted to determine, among other things, the effects of sex education on HIV/AIDS instruction. Most of the responding schools reported limited HIV/AIDS instruction. Those school districts that opted to teach sex education covered more content. Units on AIDS were most often presented in science or health classes. For the majority of schools, in-service workshops for teachers and administrators were not provided. Schools with predominantly minority enrollments were less likely to devote time to HIV/AIDS education. Recommendations are made, and include (1) the adoption of local option sex education policies, (2) increased access to instructional resources (i.e., text materials and in-service workshops for teachers), and (3) increased emphasis on HIV/AIDS education in predominantly minority schools.

Living with a psychopathic personality: case history of a successful anti-social personality.

Anti-social personalities may be successful in life to a great extent. This is obscured by the tendency to study only those anti-social personalities who are imprisoned, in hospital, or undergoing therapy. We present a case history of Tom, a successful anti-social personality. He was 21 years old when the author lived with him for about 1 year. Tom used his skills to manipulate others and never went to prison nor was he ever ordered into therapy, although he did seek it out voluntarily for a brief period of time. Perhaps what kept him out of trouble with the law was that Tom stole only from friends and acquaintances, and not from strangers. He appeared to be an anti-social personality, but one who was fairly successful at it. Of course, the failure to develop non-manipulative close attachments to others means that the antisocial personality loses out by not having the kind of love, closeness, or stability of friendships that normal people can have.

Using humor in psychotherapy with a sex offender.

Humor was used during psychotherapy with a 22-year-old child molester. The humor appeared to help establish rapport and led to his admission of desires to rape and torture adult women. Here exchange of humor seemed to be a helpful adjunct to psychotherapy.

Birth order, development and personality.

First borns tend to be different, some of the time, than children born into the other birth orders. This seems due to parental treatment. Parents are often overly anxious about their first child, and may be more restrictive with the first child than with later children. It may be that this is especially true if the first child is female, given the tendency of parents to be more protective of females than of males. Also, the first child has more time alone with the parents than subsequent children, by virtue of having no siblings until the second child is born. From the above factors, it appears that first borns grow up more fearful than later born children but also more intellectually oriented. These are only tendencies and would not be absolutely true in every instance. But, the birth order does seem to initiate a tendency for things to be as stated. As a result, first borns achieve much more than the other birth orders, perhaps due to early adult-oriented styles learned when they had only the parents and no other siblings. If this speculation is correct, the same finding should hold for only children as well. The greater anxiety, achievement, and creativity of some first borns means their lives may be very different as a result of having been the first born child in the family.

Treatment of incarcerated offenders. Possibilities and problems.

The author discusses in detail the operations of a prison treatment program for youthful offenders. Although a model program and an exception to the typical prison, the treatment program had problems. One is the inherent difficulty of working with anti-social people. The other, analyzed in detail, is the unpleasant nature of many of the prison staff, several of whom were unqualified to work in a treatment setting. Suggestions are made for humanizing the staff.

Attitudes of American youth concerning military and civilian jobs.

This study of 306 youths compared the attitudes toward military and civilian jobs among blacks, Hispanics, whites, and Asian-Americans, and for males versus females. Results indicated that blacks and Hispanics, but not Asian-Americans, had a more favorable attitude toward military service than did whites, and males viewed military service more favorably than did females. Military service was seen as patriotic and providing leadership training, while civilian jobs were seen as allowing for more freedom and being more enjoyable.
