Compact mock loops of the systemic and pulmonary circulation for blood pump testing.

Mock loops are an important tool for in vitro investigations of artificial blood pumps. The simple windkessel, throttle, and atrium principle was used for the mock loop design presented. The components of the systemic and the pulmonary mock loop were designed according to calculated numerical simulation parameters. The loops offer a compact design and simple handling. For simulating biventricular assist or total artificial heart (TAH), both loops can be coupled correspondingly. The numerical simulation and the first results with the loops show very good similarity to physiological data of systemic and pulmonary circulation. The measurements of pump characteristics are significant for quantitative comparison of different pump sizes and types, or driving systems.

Prevention of handgun deaths.

Rising numbers of deaths from firearms occurred as a consequence of the increased availability of handguns in the homes of victims. Physician counselling about the risks of handgun ownership and the implementation of stricter handgun control laws are measures needed to address this major public health problem.

Conflicting and cooperating cues: perception of cues to final consonant voicing by infants and adults.

Three experiments were conducted to ascertain the relative salience of two cues for final consonant voicing in infants and adults. Experiment 1 was designed to investigate infant perception of periodicity of burst, vowel duration, and the two cues combined in a cooperating pattern. Experiment 2 was designed to examine infant perception of these same cues but in a conflicting pattern, that is, with extended duration associated with the voiceless final plosive. Experiment 3 examined perception of the stimuli from Experiments 1 and 2 with adult subjects. Results indicate that in both adults and infants combined cues facilitate discrimination of the phonemic contrast regardless of whether the cues cooperate or conflict. The three experiments taken together do not support a phonetic interpretation of conflicting/cooperating cues for the perception of final stop consonant voicing. Potential psychoacoustic explanations are discussed.

Computer system for quantitative evaluation of an electrotactile vocoder for artificial hearing.

A computer-controlled experimental electrotactile vocoder system is designed to evaluate quantitatively the transmission of speech information and to test various design options for tactual vocoders. The system is composed of a digital speech synthesizer, a digital vocoder, a computer-driven electrotactile display, and an adaptive controller for psychophysical experimentation. Samples of continua representing speech contrast types occurring in natural languages are synthesized by systematically manipulating selected subphonemic features. The synthesized speech stimuli are processed using a programmable vocoder and presented to the skin with an electrotactile display belt worn on the abdomen. Transmission of significant speech parameters is quantitatively evaluated using adaptive psychophysical techniques and labeling tests. The system is used to assess the potential of speech transmission through the skin and to evaluate different vocoder configurations and processing techniques for tactual vocoders to be used as artificial hearing devices by the deaf.
