Stereologic evaluation of the vasculature in a MX1 xenotransplanted tumour model after combinations of treatment with ifosfamide, hyperthermia and irradiation.

The vascularization of tumours is a critical parameter of their growing and metastatic behaviour. However, little is known about the morphologic reactions of the microvasculature, especially the capillary bed of tumours and the adjacent tissue. In this study, the vessels in MX1 xenotransplants in athymic nu/nu nude mice were quantified and the angioarchitecture was visualized with the aim of presenting stereologic parameters of vessels based on a morphometric analysis of post mortem tissue blocks which were processed by standard histological procedures. In order to study changes of the microvasculature of MX1 tumours, the xenotransplanted nude mice were treated by different therapeutic regimens. Standardized hyperthermia, ifosfamide and irradiation therapies were applied. Special interest was focused on early changes of capillaries and of the pre- as well as post-terminal vascular bed. The stereologic evaluation of capillaries and larger vessels immediately after the therapy with ifosfamide and hyperthermia shows an increase of the mean capillary sizes. Furthermore, tumour samples after the 5th day of irradiation (5 x 2 Gy) and combinations of irradiation and chemotherapy treatment have been investigated. After 5 days of irradiation, a significant decrease of the vascular density was found. The results presented here clearly show that the timing and the mode of therapy influence the capillary morphology and periterminal vasculature of xenotransplanted MX1 tumours.

[Morphometric studies of biological changes in synapses of the human caudate nucleus].

In the adult the caudate nucleus decreases with increasing age. Light microscopic measurements result in smaller sized neurons and a reduced neuropil in the aged. Comparable to a sintering, nerve cells move nearer, and in consequence, their density increases. The total number of nerve cells, however, does not change remarkably. Using electronmicroscopic methods the aging of synapses was morphometrically examined: Blocks of the caudate nucleus were cut out of formalin-fixed brains from 43 males who had died between the 22nd and 102nd year of age without any neurological symptoms. The blocks were contrasted with EPTA (ethanolic phosphotungstic acid) and embedded in araldite. Though the whole tissue was autolytic, presynaptic and postsynaptic densities were well-preserved and clearly visible. Their numbers and sizes were measured with semiautomatic procedures. The regression analysis shows a significant decrease of the density of synapses with increasing age. The aging of the human caudate nucleus is characterized by a decrease of its volume, by a reduction of the size of neuronal perikarya, and a diminution of the number of synapses per neuron. But the total number of nerve cells remains nearly constant.

Establishing a nursing informatics program.

Nursing informatics is the synthesis of nursing science, information management science, and computer science to enhance the input, retrieval, manipulation, and/or distribution of nursing data. The literature abounds with articles stressing the unmet computer needs of nurses. Nurses must go beyond knowing computer terms and following basic program commands; they must be informatics competent. This article proposes five courses in nursing informatics to enhance all areas of nursing: practice, administration, education, and research.

Ossification of the calcaneus in the normal fetal foot and in clubfoot.

The ossification of the fetal calcaneus was studied in a series of plastinated sections of 44 normal feet and three clubfeet. The results documented a precise sequence of perichondral and endochondral ossification in the normal calcaneus characterized by ossification grooves and associated cartilage canals. Within the clubfoot calcaneus, the coordination of perichondral and endochondral ossification is disturbed, ossification grooves and associated cartilage canals are not found in regular positions, and the process of endochondral ossification obviously is disturbed. The findings in the clubfoot specimens point to grave irregularities of the extracellular matrix within or outside the calcaneus.
